So,
Jeep Wrangler JL Alternator/generator Mopar#68452771AF replacement 20241208_171049
this is my first 2021 jeep wrangler 3.6L willys. I was told it had an alternater/generator hybrid part number with mopar was #68452771AF. I normally do work like this with my dad, but he's passed away. I managed to remove what was in my way, but this doesn't look like the alternator/generator. Do I need to remove the front cap to access the old one? My warranty ended and this is a 4k fix. But I have replaced the alternator in my 2002 dodge ram before, but this doesn't look the same. I decided to give it a go myself, as I have already bought the part. If anyone could guide me, I'd appreciate it. Thank you. Also, how do you remove the metal clips on the right side. The clips holding the black pipe. Thank you.

I wish you luck as I have no idea how that would easily come out given the size. Hopefully you don't have to remove the radiation to get it out!

Fortunately for you @Odyssey USA just did a fantastic walkthrough of this job.

What you're looking at is the motor generator unit (MGU). This is what is effectively an alternator on the E-torque vehicles. This component is covered under the 8 year/80k hybrid warranty; you should double check to see if you're still covered here. That being said, 99% of the time a charging issue with these is caused by the 48V power pack unit (PPU) and not the MGU.

If you're sure it's the MGU and it isn't covered under warranty you need to be aware the new MGU must be programmed with the dealer scan tool or it will not function. This job is also significantly more involved than your 2002 dodge alternator. If you are not comfortable with this repair I would strongly suggest having a dealer perform the replacement as you will need to visit them regardless to get programmed. Personally I would return the component you purchased and let the dealer perform an accurate diagnosis of the charging system before continuing.

Still learning! I didn’t know a replacement of the MGU would need programming for the new part. Oddly…this question occurred to me a couple of days ago but I got sidetracked and forgot to ask.

Yup, they ship in a generic state and need to be flashed to the correct software. In addition, once you flash it you need to turn the key off and let it sit for ~20 minutes before the damn thing will actually start charging.

Just curious if you ended up replacing it yourself or took it to the dealer?
