After removing Spare tire..???????

Got a flat and took my spare tire off for the first time....there is a rectangular area with rubber flaps. What the heck is that for? I would have thought that There would at least be a cover over it but do not understand what that whole unit is for. Any help would be appreciated....Thanks

Cabin venting. Allows pressure equalization in the cab. JK's have it also.
