Considering buying a folding trailer to put behind our LJRD and it has a 7 pin with brakes. I don't want to rush into a decision for a brake controller and the trailer only weighs 2100lbs. Will I have an issue hooking this up to get it home? Assuming the brakes just won't work but the trailer will still roll along?
I intend to get a controller but don't know what yet. I have a 6.5 x 12 trailer that can handle 3500lbs with no brakes so don't see this as a safety issue for one trip.

Thanks!

I tow 2000 lbs regularly with no brake controller. From a safety standpoint, no issues, and you're correct, the trailer brakes just won't do anything. My trailer also has brakes... so they just aren't being used right now.

What @Aonar showed is the more important consideration. What do you need by law... I'm in AZ and here i think the requirement is also 3000+ lbs requires trailer brakes. I think some states require brakes on trailers as small as 2k lbs.

Sadly, you are correct. I am in the process of getting a fairly light one BUT because of the many different State laws, AND I will be off road with it, I am getting a controller as well.

I have towed way more than I should have in my 2012 2 door. Yes, it can be done but I am paranoid because of the laws.

To be clear, im not worried about the weight, more worried about how the trailer will react to not having a controller. I have the tow package so I do have the connector.

Here is what we tow now with no brakes.

I think regardless of what the law in your state is, you’ll be fine taking an empty trailer home! Don’t think may cops would really even look twice that a guy in a jeep is pulling an empty trailer. I would just get the mopar or redarc, actually I think they may be the same controller. Easy plug and play though.

Sadly the Wrangler is rated at only like 3,500 lbs so most of what is legally towed will not require trailer brakes by state laws. Typical state law is heavier than 3,000 lbs needs trailer brakes.

Your trailer at 2,100 lbs will be just fine without trailer brakes, just give yourself some extra distance to brake

Correct; as a rule…..LEO could care less about everyday Joe going down the road with a trailer not equipped with trailer brakes.

Plaster on a US DOT number…..and everything changes.

If the trailer has electric brakes, they just won’t work without a brake controller. Stopping distance will increase, drive accordingly.

As noted above, allow more distance when breaking. You will only have an LE issue should you happen to have an accident on your way home, and stopping distance is an issue related to the collision.

Saw an Acura sedan flat towing a Ford fusion with a tow bar on the freeway. Pretty sure there's no functional brakes in the Ford or brake controller in the Acura. I don't think you need to worry about a 2-3k pound trailer at all.
