3 weeks old, overheats!

Picked up my new 2 door JL not quite 3 weeks ago, everything was mostly going well....
Last weekend I noticed the temp guage was a little over half, which is a little warmer than usual. One of those things that didn't cause me to be alarmed but concerned and curious. Today on the way home from work (in the usual stop and go afternoon traffic on the freeway), the temp gauge got up to about 75% and the engine light came on (the lit picture of the motor, not "check engine"). As I attempted to get over to the right and pull off the freeway (which took a few moments for lane changes and gaps in traffic) the temp guage was pegged and a warning beep came from the dash. I quickly found a safe place to pull onto the shoulder and parked the vehicle. I waited a few moments and popped the hood. No steam, no leaking coolant, the overflow canister for the coolant was at the proper level, and other than being extremely hot in the engine bay, everything seemed fine.

I let the engine cool for about 10 minutes and then re-started the Jeep. The temp guage was at about 30%, so I got on the road again and tried to make it home. It took about 10 minutes but the Jeep overheated again (temp gauge pegged and warning chime sounding). I pulled off the road and checked the coolant again, still fine and no leaks. I let it cool for about 10 minutes again, and was able to make it home with the temp gauge at around 75%. Now that I'm home and can safely look into what might be the problem, I still can't find anything.

I made a service appointment, and even though the vehicle is essentially "new", they can't get me in for service for another 9 days. They had to show restraint not to laugh at me over the phone when I asked about the possibility of a
loaner car to use in the meantime. In full disclosure, the dealership that is doing the service/warranty work is NOT the same dealership where I purchased the vehicle. And I only mention it because I have a few days to gather information from other members here on the forum. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I did a search on "overheating" but nothing came up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I'm pretty sure it was. To be honest, I was so focused on finding a leak or something worse, I forgot to check the obvious. Thank you for perspective, Ron. I will go check fuses now, maybe even run it at idle and see if it gets warm enough for the fan to come on.

Did you opt for AC in your 2dr? Was it on because the fan sounds like a jet engine is about to take off when it’s a full speed.
You also might want to contact @JeepCares about the issue. They might be able to help you get the jeep looked at sooner than 9 days from now which seems rediculous!

oh, yes by the way, I do have a/c. It was off at the time.

Good idea, but I doubt it. Only because I've had it just long enough to put 900 miles on it. Including a 375 mile trip home from the dealership on the hottest day yet this year. Granted it was mostly at highway speed, but so was the trip home tonight. Thanks for your input regardless.

@JeepCares is on this forum. Send them a PM about the issue and mileage and VIN and see if they can help you escalate the issue to get it looked at.
I’ve read at least one of other threads where a member was on the trail and his overheated or hot hotter than it should have. I wonder if he had his AC on that day as well.

Faulty water pump and/or thermostat? With no leaks, and the fan working, this is what I would check next.

I had a little more time to spend on it today after work. Got the engine up to 251 degrees (about 75% on the temp gauge). The fan IS NOT coming on. Which leads me to the N5 fuse (fan power 60A/100A). Unfortunately, that fuse is part of the fuse block of all 5 or 6 "N" fuses. The fuses are mounted to a bus, or metal plate. That entire plate will need to be replaced (if that is, in fact, the problem) as the fuses are not individually replaceable. I think I'm going to call the service manager and tell him what I have figured out so far, in hopes that he will buy my story and order the part ahead of time. Thanks again, to everyone for your help...

Jeep WAVE program allows for a loner while in service... Check it out as all new Jeep's are ellagable but some dealers are just not in the loop... Best to you..
