We have a 2024 Willys 2 door with the new 12” Uconnect 5 screen. I am wondering if we have a problem with ours or if what is happening is normal.

according to the manual when the display is put in Auto it should automatically dim when the headlights come on. It doesn’t.

Also, the Theme should change from Light to Dark when in auto, but it doesn’t.

Driving at night is currently dangerous because the screen does not change or dim!

I have placed Display to Manual and Theme to Dark, but the brightness adjustment for the Dark Theme is completely greyed out. I can adjust the Light brightness, which seems to dim the Dark Theme also, but then it too washed out to be useful in full sun and still overly bright at night.

Is this normal or do we need to bring it back to the dealer to have it fixed?

Also curious if this is happening to others if it’s just the Sport/Willys trim or if it’s happening on the upper trim as well. The manual list a Theme line on the menu that we don’t have. Anyone have that option?

Thanks.

To the left of your steering wheel, there should be a scrolling wheel to adjust the dash lighting brightness. Try playing with that. If I’m remembering correctly, if I scroll too far with that, my 2024 goes into bright mode, regardless of my headlights.

I tried that and it doesn't seem to have any affect on the instrument brightness or the Uconnect display brightness. In fact, other than the two extremes, I see no difference at all! All the way up turns on the overhead lights, all the way down turns them off, but no affect on the dash lights or Uconnect screen at all.

I just got in from playing with it a bit more and found that when I turn the headlight to on, the Uconnect adjustment for the Dark Theme becomes active and I was able to adjust it from 5 to 2 which helps. But, if I have the Display Brightness set to auto, it comes on at full brightness and the Light Theme, even while sitting in the garage in complete darkness! I have to set the Display Grightness to manual to keep them dimmed, but again, the display is really washed out in the day time, especially in full sun. It seems something is not working as it should...

That switch should affect both your dash and your radio screen. Sounds like it could be defective if that’s the result you are seeing. Have you tried this in the dark or a tunnel just to be sure there isn’t a light sensor?

I tested it in my garage with the door closed and lights off, so complete darkness. Also pulled it out of the garage into full sun with no difference at all. In the garage witht he door closed, the engine was not running, but the ignition was on (two taps of the start button without my foot on the brake).

A silly question but you do have the headlight switch set to Auto also? Things won't work automatically unless the head light switch is set to Auto.

Yes, it is in the Auto position. I have tried it in every position without any different results other than finally being able to set the Dark Theme to 2 with the Light Switch on the on position.

I have 2024 JL Willys 2-door. The auto-dim option does not work. I have to have it in dark mode all the time. I will bring it up at my service to the dealer.
If you get an answer on this, please post it.

Yep, I'm going to mention it to our dealer service advisor also. IMO having everything set to auto should be the best settings, but in this case, the glare from that screen at night is blinding and extremely dangerous!

I'm getting closer, but something still seems off. I was able to adjust the Dark Theme brightness with the headlight switch in the on position. I also tried the dimmer to the right of the headlight switch and it is dimming both the dash instrument cluster and the Uconnect screen, but when I put the headlight switch back to auto, everything goes full bright again! I'm going to test it again after dark this evening and see what happens. If it stays on full bright when in Auto after the headlights come on, then something definately needs to be looked at. I never touch the headlight switch in my Tacoma or my RV and they come on when needed and the dash light dim as they should. I'm hoping this will also and it's just because I'm trying to get it to work in the garage and not actually driving it.

I was having the same issue and then I figured out that little dimmer dial by headlights can’t be on the highest setting click. If you move it to the click below highest setting then the auto dimmer on the screen worked and the dash cluster is quite a bit dimmer. I wasn’t a fan of the cluster being dimmed but it’s so much easier on the eyes at night.
recap
that dial when turned all the way up will turn dome lights on.
then the next click down setting keeps dash bright as well as connect screen
If you click it down one more setting then the auto dimming finally works.
I have a 2024 4 door Willy’s for reference

Thank you! I figured that out last night when I went for a drive after dark. I also think the engine needs to be running because when I was in my garage with the garage door closed and lights off (ignition in the on position but engine not running) the dimmer didn't seem to have any effect at all on either the instrument cluster of the Uconnect screen. Last night it automatically went to dark and dimmed after the lights came on in auto mode. It isn't very intuitive and you have to actually turn the headlights on the dim the dark theme within Uconnect, but now that it's all set up it's no longer blinding us at night.

I would agree. some wording or something within the uconnect software should explain that you need your dimmer switch in that exact position for it to work. I actually just figured it out last week after having my jeep for over a month.

Same case with the TRX, it's a fine balance between too dark and to light and even then, you can't get it perfect.

Before I figured it out, at night I felt like I was being hit with the bright lights and about to be interrogated!!!

With the trend toward huge screens, they really need to make the setup simpler and more intuitive.
