Hey, I need some advice. I was surprised to find out my Jeep had a AC clutch failure and was quoted 1200 to fix it. I can’t spend that much to fix it but wanted to try here for ideas. Unfortunately I’m over on miles for my warranty.
Is this something that you need to get a mechanic to fix or is it reasonable to attempt yourself?
Thanks

need some clarification: AC Clutch as in "Air conditioning clutch", or is it the kind of clutch you have in a manual transmission?

Sorry it’s the air conditioning clutch. I’m going to get the quote I will post it soon.

This could be a number of things that are all very easy and cheap to fix, if you have even a little mechanical ability. The clutch just might need to have a shim or 2 removed, or the coil could be shot. You can buy kits that include the clutch, coil and compressor pully for $150 or less.

Most garages are going to tell you automatically that you need a new compressor, because they are too lazy/greedy/incompetent to do some simple diagnosis. There are a ton of excellent videos on Youtube about the diagnostic and repair process.

So I just spoke with the shop and he told me that you have to buy the compressor and the clutch as an assembly. I’m hoping he’s wrong just don’t know enough about them and struggled finding people with the same issue online.

I’m going to try and be optimistic and look on YouTube for those videos thanks for your reply!

What are the symptoms you are experiencing? Is the AC blowing cold at all?

I live in Pittsburgh so we finally had some warmer days. I initially hit the AC button and noticed there was a delay before I could feel cold air. It would blow warm air then would suddenly get cold. The delay started at 5 minutes then worked up to 20 minutes and now will not get cold at all. When it did turn on, the AC was cold as when I got it new. Another note, if I turned off the Jeep once it was cold then turned it back on, the cycle had to repeat.

If the clutch needs shims removed, it will generally act in the opposite way - it'll blow cold at first then stop after a few minutes.

So, if you are/were getting cold air at least sometimes, my guess is your compressor is fine and you are not low on refrigerant. That leaves a badly worn clutch, a dead coil or a failing relay as your most likely culprits. Start with the simplest thing first - swap the AC relay with a similar known good one from the fuse box and see if the AC works and/or whatever you swapped it to stops working.

I'm sorry, I'm just seeing that the shop already diagnosed the clutch as bad. If you trust the diagnosis, grab a kit like the one I linked earlier and swap it out. While you're there, swap out the coil and pulley as well.

Luckily the dealer decided to wave costs. Only had to pay 200 for a new AC Clutch assembly with labor.
