Has anyone heard or know of any current recalls on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL Sport airbags? My wife was just recently in a roll over of her Jeep. She went down an embankment, went end over end, rolled at least 2 times and came to a stop on her driver side, at a 60° angle in a drainage ditch at the bottom of the embankment. Her driver side airbag did not deploy; the stock roll bars absolutely saved her life. But I’m baffled that the airbag did not deploy. Thoughts? Ideas? Recommendations?

Before the trolls start with the woman driver garbage… she was driving safely, and due to location, GPS/Cell service was atrocious, it was wicked dark, and the GPS literally guided her off the road. Once the passenger side front wheel left the road surface, the loose dirt gave way, and the jeep followed.

First off, very glad your wife made it through that. I'm hoping injuries were minimal.

Did any airbags go off? I suppose there's a chance that it didn't trigger any of the IMUs to set off the airbags. The roof looks fairly intact - how fast do you figure she was going? I've seen low-speed rollovers on Moab and Sand Hollow videos where the airbags don't go off - it may be a similar case.

Once again, hope your wife is OK.

Airbags have specific requirements before triggering a deployment. If she didn't hit anything head-on, then you wouldn't want it exploding into her face.

They provide instantaneous protection, not a marshmallow cushion of padding.

I am under the impression the airbag deployment is based on two factors, direction of travel and rate of deceleration.
If both criterias are not met, no deployment
And if deployment requirements are not met, you absolutely do not want those bag deployed.

If you had a 2024+ Wrangler then the side curtain airbags likely would have deployed but in this case it's probably better that the airbag in the steering wheel didn't deploy. The computers obviously thought it wasn't warranted.

It was low speed, maybe 5 to 7mph max when her front wheel left the road surface. It’s hard to see, but the cap has several good cracks in it. She mostly has muscle, back and neck (soft tissue) injuries. She’s pretty bang up and in lots of pain. But it’s one she was able to walk away from. Thanks for your insight, that could very well be the case. The roll bar absolutely saved her bacon.

Hope she recovers quickly. Things can be replaced, people can’t.

Thats your answer. Airbags do not trigger at that velocity. They inflate instantaneously, and deflate almost as rapidly. So they're providing protection for literally a small fraction of a second, when the extreme deceleration from a high speed collision is occurring.

If they were to deploy in a low speed crash, it could totally happen that the driver is thrown out of position first, then their body is in close proximity to the bag launch point, and is further injured by its explosive deployment.

Thank God your wife was not seriously injured! Sheet metal can easily be repaired or Jeep replaced, loved ones not so much...Hope she has a speedy and full recovery!

Former traffic accident investigator here. Nothing I see would have caused the front airbag to activate. There has to be a certain amount of crush in the proper areas where the sensors are. Many times I’ve talked to drivers who are disappointed that the air bag didn’t deploy. Be glad it didn’t. It’s a violent, explosive event that often frightens people more than the crash. It throws people’s hands off the wheel, often causing air bag rash or bruising. Sometimes it will break a wrist or hand as it is violently slammed into the drivers door window glass. In high speed crashes they work wonders, as long as the seatbelt is worn. If no seat belt is worn they tend to increase the level of injury.

First, glad wife is ok. Next, the jeep doesn't look like it has any damage... No broken windows, no visible damage at all, except to get it yanked out of there. Just looks like it drove down the embankment. Airbags go off with contact and you described end over end and rolling 2-times?
