Hey Folks,

Can anyone provide some insight as to what the clicking sound on my 2020 Jeep 2.0L engine might be (130K KMs)?

I've attached videos.

No Check engine light.

Just had the transmission replaced 5,000 KMs ago, unfortunately cost me $6,500 CDN :(

Thanks!
Rich

I'm not familiar with the quirks of the 4-banger, but that could be a bad rocker arm (although that's more of a Pentastar thing), rod, or belt. The fact you can hear it inside the cabin is reason alone to get it looked at.

@Lucky613

That plainly sounds like a speed-sensitive knocking.

I can only spitball from where I'm sitting, so...
The sound in the videos is quite similar to the knocking I heard in my YJ's 2.5L 4-cyl. engine after I started it on a winter morning a few months after purchasing it new. I took it to the dealer for examination. They diagnosed piston slap, meaning incorrect cylinder boring at the factory. The fix was warranty replacement of the short block.

When the same problem reoccurred a little while later, with the replacement block in situ, I sold the vehicle back to Jeep.

Yes, have your engine examined by a trusted mechanic, Rich, and let us know what, if anything, is discovered. I do hope it's not as bad as what I experienced, but I also wanted you to have a salient data point to keep on hand during the troubleshooting process.

The 2.0 is a noisy engine to start with. But not that noisy. It needs to be looked at before it causes more problems.

I have heard, in the past, a similar sound from an exhaust leak. However, as mentioned, it's difficult to tell from here. Just trying to be positive ..

Took it to the dealership, engine replacement required - quoted at $20,000 Canadian! :(

Not happy.

I leased the jeep for 3 years then bought it out from the dealership, paying over 60 months. 4 months later the transmission went, and the dealership quoted me at $15,000 Canadian. When I bought the vehicle after the lease I bought a 3rd party warranty the dealership sold me for up to 180,000 KMs; it had 105,000 when I bought it after the lease; mostly highway driving. They would not honour the warranty because I had gone 2000 KMs over the 10,000 KMs period for an oil change. I had done a change 8 weeks earlier, and used a synthetic blend too, but had taken the Jeep on a couple of trips, just before the transmission went. The engine oil was fine, but they decided not to help. I was left in a city 750 KMs away from where I was (on a golf competition with my daughter) having to try and phone people to find a used transmission and someone who could install it. Luckily for me there was a guy who had his own shop, that actually rebuilt transmission for Chrysler for 20+ years, who was able to have one with 10,000 KMs on it shipped from the USA. 18 days later it was installed and working for $8,000 Canadian out of my pocket. Jump ahead 6 or 7 weeks and I hear a clicking in the engine - and the engine goes. Very frustrating :(

Waiting to hear of the warranty folks will honour the warranty this time, only been 5,000 KMs since the last oil change.

Dealership just called and may have a used one with 25,000 KMs on it for $13,500 installed.

I phoned Chrysler Canada Customer Care line, after opening 3 cases via email over the last few weeks without response, to see if they could help, and some guy who could barely speak english told me - sorry we can't help you, is there anything we can help you with today?

Cannot believe that kind of support with such obvious weak (sub standard) parts / products.

Really wishing I didn't take the plunge and buy it :(

Ugh. I was hoping that my experience (post #3) didn't turn out to be similar to your own, Rich.

Hopefully the warranty company will do the right thing for you, if you decide to keep the vehicle.

Bummer. So what did they find wrong with the engine?

He said he wasn't sure without taking it apart, but said it could be a connector rod, piston pin or main bearing - a bottom end knocking.

Looks like the warranty company is going to cover $10k Canadian and I'll be on the hook for another $3.5k, to put a used one in with 29,000 KMs. 60-day warranty; hopefully no problems with this one.
