So I head this from a dealer today when inquiring on discounts on a 2018 (Security Dodge in Amityville, NY). He would not offer any discount on the 2018.

Dealer: "The 2019's are just starting to trickle in and you will find that over the next month you will see more 2019's on the lot"

Me: "Jeep is taking order for 2020's and I believe no more 2019's are even being produced. I think 2020 production starts next week."

Dealer: "Yeah, but the 2020's wont be here for a long time."

----

Am I wrong here: If you were to buy 2 identical Jeeps ('18 and a '20) brand new on the same day and immediately trade them in, the '18 would have at least 15% more depreciation over the '20.

You are right on the depreciation. I wouldn’t buy a 2018 for any discount

I seriously doubt the depreciation is anywhere near a 15% difference.
According to KBB.com two identical Jeeps where the only difference is one is 2018, the other is 2019, the difference in value is ~$500. It looks like the difference is on the scale of $300-$1000.
You can't check the value of a 2020 yet. Obviously the difference would be slightly more but not likely to be on the order of a 15% difference.

Not to mention it has all the first run components lol. It’s not like buying a 2016 JK in 2018.

My 2 cents. I bought an 18 a month ago for more than $10k off sticker. SAME vehicle as a 2020 when I’m ready to sell, if I ever sell it, the difference will be very minimal. I don’t understand the logic of not getting the same car for possibly 5-10k off just to have a 2 year newer same Jeep. That no one will care about in a few years.

Because, when looking back at our mistakes, hindsight isn't 20-18...;)

If you're going to keep it 10 years and put 10k miles a year on it, then yes, in 2029 when you go to sell your 2018 with 100k miles, it probably is not much different than if you're going to sell a 2020 with 100k miles.

However, if you're going to keep it 3 years and put 6k miles a year on it... then in 2023, you either have a "2020 jeep with just 18k miles" which to the average Joe sounds like it may as well be brand new, vs a 2018 which sounds like it is 5 years old and you only drove it 3500 miles a year. Even down the road "it was a dealer leftover" makes it sound like nobody wanted to buy it.

I'm not saying you did the wrong thing, but the decision isn't that easy. Add in the fact that the 2018s had plenty of first model run issues and the question is even bigger. Owning a 2019 Ram that came off the line in month 4 or 5, I'd happily pay an extra $500 to trade it for one that came off the line in month 13 or 14.

PLUS the real comparison isn't MSRP vs $10k off - the real question is 5-7% under invoice vs $10k off sticker. There's definitely a number that would get me to buy a 2018, but it would have to be a pretty notable discount vs 7% under invoice.

I did the EXACT same thing. Mine was 9.5k off sticker, and much lower than invoice (I don't remember the number but I think it was close to 10%). However, I don't think every dealer is offering discounts. My dealer had technically purchased all the 18s they had (instead of just having them slotted to them) to cash in on some bonuses etc, then discounted the crap out of them to get them gone. Obvious why, they wanted to put a lot of gladiators on the lot.

According to build date, it was made in September 18, so likely one if the later 18s. Couldn't be happier!

I do plan on keeping mine for 7 years at least and will likely put 100-140k on it during that time though.

That’s surprising especially because that dealer was just offering $10k off sticker just a few weeks ago.

My 18 was an October build normally that’d be the next model year JK/JL 18 made the 18 run longer so it was Only 7 months old. Fingers crossed on no issues, none so far ✌

I wouldn't buy an 18 without a huge discount. It is two model years old now.
Sure two years old, not model years...it is the latest model. The model changed in 2018 to JL

He is correct in stating they are 2 model years old.

The generation/platform changed in 2018, but each year is still called a model year.
