Hello fellow Jeepers.

I have a fairly new-to-me 2018 JLU Sahara with electrical gremlins. I'm experiencing intermittent check engine lights with no discernible cause. The CEL will illuminate randomly, along with the Electronic Stability Control Indicator, and the infamous Service Start Stop System (which I understand is illuminated because the CEL is on). Occasionally the Service 4WD, Air Bag Warning, BRAKE (alert indication, not the service brake indicator)and the ABS will temporarily illuminate but then clear themselves after a minute or two.

The following four confirmed codes are typically what I see:

U1110 Lost Vehicle Speed Message
U0121 Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A"
U11BC Lost Brake Switch Message
U1120 Lost Wheel Distance Message

However, if I run a full scan, I come up with the following codes:

1 Front Control Module (Central Gateway) Code
U0002- CanCBusOffPerformance:NoSubTypeInformation 00

1 Radio Frequency Hub Code
U0121- Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A": No

9 Tire Pressure Monitor Codes
U0121- Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A"
C151C- Tire Pressure Sensors Missing: No Sub Type Information
C151D- TirePressureSensorLocationUndetermined:NoSubTypeInformation
C1504- Tire Pressure Sensor 4 Internal: Component Internal Failure
C1503- Tire Pressure Sensor 3 Internal: Component Internal Failure
C1502- Tire Pressure Sensor 2 Internal: Component Internal Failure
C1501- Tire Pressure Sensor 1 Internal: Component Internal Failure
C1580- Left/Right Side Tire Pressure Sensor Location Undetermined
C1581- Front/Rear Tire Pressure Sensor Location Undetermined

3 Anti Lock Brakes Codes
C1252- Vacuum Pump Control Circuit/Performance: Performance or Incorrect Operation 92 CONFIRMED
U0002- CanCBusOffPerformance:NoSubTypeInformation
C0051- Steering Wheel Position Sensor: Signal Bias Level Out of Range / Zero Adjustment 28 Failure CONFIRMED

1 Electronic Shifter Module Code
U0002- CanCBusOffPerformance:NoSubTypeInformation

2 Drivetrain Control Module Codes
U0121- Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A"
U0415- Invalid Data Received from Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A"

1 Steering Column Control Module Code
U0001- CANCBus:NoSubTypeInformation

12 Powertrain Control Module Codes
U0432 Invalid Data Received From Multi-axis Acceleration Sensor Module
U0418 Implausible Data Received From Brake System Control Module 1
U120C Lost Brake Booster Signal
U0129 Lost Communication With Brake System Control Module 1
U0125 Lost Communication With Dynamics Sensor
U1141 Lost Brake and Torque Messages
C053F Brake Pressure Sensor "A" Circuit High
U11A3 Lost Brake Pressure Sensor 1 Message
U1110 Lost Vehicle Speed Message
U1120 Lost Wheel Distance Message
U11BC Lost Brake Switch Message
U11A4 Lost Brake Pressure Sensor 2 Message

1 Transmission Control Module Code
U0121- Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A"

I had an issue first thing this morning and these are the confirmed CEL codes:

U0001 CAN C Bus
P04D1 EGR Temperature Sensor "C" Circuit High
U24C0 No description available
P10D1 No description available
P01D1 Cylinder 4 Injection Timing Performance - Over Retarded
P2001 NOx Adsorber Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2
U0121 Lost Communication With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module "A" P2302 Ignition Coil 1 Secondary Circuit - Insufficient Ionization
P22C2 O2 Sensor Pumping Current Trim Circuit/Open Bank 2 Sensor 2
P0A43 Drive Motor "A" Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent
B3C05 No description available
U11E4 CAN Communication Messages Missing
U0401 Implausible Data Received From ECM/PCM
U0101 Lost Communication with TCM
P12D1 No description available

Not to mention a whole slew of other codes when I do a full scan.

The TPMS CELs are expected, the previous owner did not install TPMS sensors with the aftermarket wheels and tires. Aux battery was replaced within the last 60 days and the main battery was replaced 3/23 and tests good with my fancy Harbor Freight battery tester.

Anyone ever experienced this before and if so, what was the solution?

Thanks! I have the ESS, but my Aux Battery was replaced less than 60 days ago and the Main Battery was replaced March 2023. The Main Battery, in a disconnected state, passes the load test with my cheap Harbor Freight tester.

Please clear your codes completely and report back with a new set when the issue occurs again, I don't know what the hell is going on here. Maybe try a different scan tool.

P0A43 Drive Motor "A" Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent - This is an 4XE code.
P2001 NOx Adsorber Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2 - This is a diesel code
P22C2 O2 Sensor Pumping Current Trim Circuit/Open Bank 2 Sensor 2 - This isn't even a real DTC for our vehicles.
P01D1 Cylinder 4 Injection Timing Performance - Over Retarded - This also isn't real
P2302 Ignition Coil 1 Secondary Circuit - Insufficient Ionization - This usually means an ignition coil is unplugged/open circuit
P04D1 EGR Temperature Sensor "C" Circuit High- EGR sensor open circuit

Disregarding the completely random codes, it primarily appears that your ABS module is going offline randomly.

I appreciate the feedback, Alphawolff. I've been suspicious of the ABS module as well. I will clear everything and come back by on the next event. Thanks!

Yup, your ABS module is going offline randomly. There's also a bunch of other lost com DTCs in there indicating your can-c network is going down rather than just one module. It's possible it's a wiring issue or one module itself is faulty causing it to take down the network.

Would be hard to diagnose, I'd suggest taking it to a dealer. There's a lot of trial and error here unfortunately. One of those times where you really need to diagnose the fault as it is occurring

Edit; just realized it's a 2018. Try replacing both can bus blocks behind the glove box

Went through very similar issues last year - Green canbus was the culprit. $8 and 10 minutes to fix.

Thanks, Phrank, I appreciate the response. The Green can bus you're referring to is located behind the glove box, correct?

That's the one. Dealers are charging a fortune for them, but I got the exact same OEM piece on Ebay for like $8. Install is super simple.

Hey Phrank and Alphawolff, thanks again for you help. I've ordered both Canbus star connectors. Hopefully they will do the trick.

For anyone else who may stumble across this post and is in search of the Mopar part numbers, they are:
  • 68140647AA BUSS CONNECTOR STAR (13 way White Connector)
  • 68321746AA BUSS CONNECTOR STAR (20 way Green Connector)

hey Cordell!

doesn't look like you've been here for nearly a year (just a few days after you started this thread). any chance you might get a notification and come back and tell us how this worked out for you?
