In 1992 my parents bought me a 1989 YJ. Tomorrow I am going to pickup a 2024 4xe Willys. This is a summary of my history with Jeep vehicles.

  • 1989 YJ:
    • White with an automatic and 4.0.
    • My parents bought this used because the 65 Mustang that I bought myself for $500.00 was not 'safe'. So yeah, they got me a 'nice and safe' YJ.
    • I was 16 and thought I was the shit with this YJ. Like I could walk on water.
    • When I first got it, every imaginable AutoZone accessory was on this Jeep (remember those light guards that clipped onto the lens?)
    • Got in October. Could not wait till spring to swap the hardtop and drive doorless.
    • My dad refused to ride in it because it 'rearranged' his spine.
    • The Jeep wave was more special back then.
    • Stereo system was so loud you could drive on the highway topless and doorless and not notice you were topless and doorless.
    • Lost my doors for a week. Dad was pissed ('how the f--- do you loose doors?'). Eventually found them in a friend's garage.
  • 1993 YJ:
    • Forest Green with an automatic and 4.0.
    • I turned this into a Sahara clone (sans green seats)
    • From the period of my life when I dressed like Steve Irwin.
    • Recently found a essay notebook form 11th grade containing several essays discussing why a green Jeep was superior to a white one (think Ralphie in a Christmas Story level cringe)
  • 1997 TJ:
    • Red with Manual and the 4 cylinder.
    • This was the first TJ delivered to my dealer. I remember it was a problem getting the insurance cards because Geico did not yet have a 1997 Wrangler in their system.
    • Had BFG all terrains (white lettering out) with American Racing Equipment Outlaw II rims. Best look ever.
    • Half doors with zipper windows were interesting (I smoked at that time)
    • Had a huge stereo system. One night the sprinkler system at my house got the stereo wet and it turned on, at full blast, at like 4am. Had to disconnect the battery to silence it and the neighbors.
    • My father stopped paying the lease because one night on a 3 hour drive home I refused to put the top up because "You don't put tops up on Jeeps in the summer when it is not raining hard." I made him pull the seat as close to the dash as possible to try to stop him complaining that his 'balls were in his chest'.
    • This was by far my most favorite car ever. I still cry about it.
  • 1999 Grand Cherokee:
    • Granite-ish metallic with a V8.
    • I thought I was a grown-up when I got my first real job and leased this. I even got the leather interior with a factory CD player.
    • Wound up starting a company in Boston, but lived in NY. Put 98k miles on a 36k mile lease and tried to negotiate out of it.
  • 2020 JT Gladiator:
    • Red with automatic and max tow
    • Before this went through a Mercedes phase, then had a 95 Taco and a 2016 F-150.
    • Needed a Gladiator for towing, Wrangler would not work.
    • Someone ran a red light and hit me with 750 miles on it. His car was totaled (I drove over his sienna's hood); I drove home. Insurance paid 28k to fix it. Its a 47k truck.
  • 2024 JLU 4xe Willys
    • Anvil with convenience and safety
    • My 16 year old daughter thinks it is going to be hers LOL.
    • Not sure what I am going to do without a pickup.

Your YJ years matched me perfectly (except for the essays, I have different cringe :) ). Even the 60's Mustang. Wasn't that great when the only piece of crap car you could afford was a rusty beat up 1960's 426 cubic inch (7.0L) V8 Muscle Car? Where the brakes sometimes required a double pump to work? What better vehicle for a teenager to be driving!

I swear the Silent Generation had no problem giving us enough rope to hang ourselves and Boomers really did actively try to kill us.

And that led into the safe vehicle. A bouncy, wandery, topless and doorless YJ which made 60 feel like doing 100. What a great time to be alive! (if you survived it)

Got my first speeding ticket in the YJ. Was going 77 in a 55. My dad was impressed that I was able to get the YJ to 77 and not kill myself.

77. Not too shabby!

I wish I still had my YJ. But mainly because my wife complains that the JL is terrible on the highway. Oh, so sorry dear. Take the YJ instead. (Which will have hidden cameras so I can enjoy the look of sheer terror on her face)

I have a pretty uninteresting Jeep history. I've looked at a lot of Jeeps but never actually bought one until the JLU, lol.

My history of "Almost bought" Jeeps are:

1998 Cherokee
2009 JKU
2010 Commander 5.7
2012 Patriot "Trail Rated"

Finally bought the 2018 JLU from the first shipment of JLUs to my dealer.

All unlimited Rubicons with 6 speeds. Last 3 all had the color matched fenders and hard tops. I think I like my current one the most.

Damn I'm surprised you could go from the cherokee to those three vehicles in a row and still stick with the brand. The 2008-2011 period was not kind for jeep.

Someone bought that Cherokee before I could get back from leave to look at it but it was at the top of my short list. I bought a Dakota that was also short listed but available when I got back.

For the life of me, I can't remember why we didn't just go ahead and buy that Commander, because I really liked it when I drove it. I did wind up with a 2010 Ram 1500 that was eventually traded for my current Jeep.
