OK so I have read through some previous posts to try and figure this one out but I haven't found an answer yet.

How do you shut down the engine if the ignition button is not responsive? There has to be some way to shut down the engine in an emergency situation.

JLUS, 3.6 with Auto trans. A pretty standard setup.

This isn't just a hypothetical question as it actually happened to me on Saturday night and the jeep is at the dealership now so that they can try to figure out why. Fortunately it wasn't for a crazy emergency or wreck or anything weird - I just got home about 9pm after a pretty normal trip out on the beach, parked in the driveway but the engine would not shut off.

No amount of pushing the button did anything. I tried holding it in, pressing it normally, pressing quickly, foot on and off the brake, in and out of gear, parking brake on and off etc... The engine was getting so incredibly hot from idling in the driveway that I took all my personal belongings out and parked it at the end of the driveway by the road in case it caught fire.

I don't really know why but about an hour and 40 minutes after getting home, the engine stopped, there were no lights on the button to show OFF or ACC but from the dash it showed the ignition was still on. I jumped out, grabbed a wrench and disconnected the main battery thinking that would kill the computer and stop it from restarting or at least stop it from draining the battery. That didn't kill the dashboard so that must get some power from the second start/stop battery and I wasn't about to try and find that to disconnect it (I almost burnt myself disconnecting the main battery).

This morning, the battery was connected, it cranked and started fine. I drove it to the dealership and my thought was that if it didn't shut off they could figure it out - of course it shut off just fine. They will probably have it all day and tell me nothing is wrong which scares the crap out of me - what if this happens somewhere when I cant just park it at the end of my driveway like at the airport or at a hotel.

Anyway, does anyone know how to shut down the engine if the ignition button is not responsive?
Thanks

Just an update for this for those that might look. My dealer also said the best way to shut it off if it was to happen again was to pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Lol, just like @SmartStopStart.com said.

As for what they found - they said the computer showed that it had lost communication to the ignition module. They checked all the cables and did a reset. It seems fine now but still makes me a little nervous.

Kind of makes me wonder if all of our computerized stuff is a Windows operating system...

I hate all this electronic crap. I wish they would sacrifice a couple of mpg, and go back to a more reliable, and simplified time.
I am pretty sure one day all these computers will destroy us

Nah, they're not that dumb. They're using a realtime OS, which amazingly enough is somewhat standardized in the car industry.

Third edit, yay. I found some info straight from FCA!

Also: Simulink. :sun:

Edit #5: Losing communication with a module sounds like either the module is defective or the wiring harness is. I kinda doubt that's a software problem.

Is it Unix-based? I’m really curious!

Disregard. I see it is POSIX-based. Interesting. Hopefully there is a robust organic security layer that will thwart hackers.

i remember them doing something that pissed a lot of modders off but I can’t remember exactly what it was. I am not worried much about what can be done if someone plugs something into the ODB port or whatever inside the car, more about what messages the LTE connected 8.4 radios can send. As far as I know the radio itself just runs android lol.

Edit: for reference the older systems use qnx. I think they switched to android in 2017 or so? And the 5” radio runs windows!

It will only take enough time to get out of warranty to figure out if it does it again, lol. only time will tell.
