A lot of it is probably due to the print vs. online/digital thing. When you know what you're writing will be printed (and therefore very difficult to fix typos) you probably spend a lot more time proof-reading. Although, I think you're right, much of it is probably related to the much faster pace-of-life these days, too.

Yes I fully agree with you here. Also, twitter arguments should not be considered news.
