I am happy with the Hooke road shelf. It is very sturdy. There is at least a foot between the back of the front seats and the shelf. I am out on a trip in the Power Wagon and can't give you an ecact figure.
Thanks. Just worried about wasted space. My DIY shelf is sized perfect and fits tight to the back of my front seat, but is starting to fail. I may just beef up my current shelf. Enjoy the trip.

I looked through the last few pages of this thread and realized I have not posted any picture of the storage system I am using on my 2-door JL.

American Adventure labs built these for me, and they are now available for purchase if anyone wants to do this with their 2-door. I am using their MASS+ Storage Platform that can be used standalone as the world's best "cargo mat" or be used to mount sliders or storage drawers.

For a storage shelf I am using an AAL Overland Storage Shelf. Underneath is a new slide that is narrower and longer than the 4-door version, and a 6" tall storage drawer that is wider, and also longer than the 4-door versions.

I have two side by side Milwaukee Packout mounts on the front of the overland shelf that I can attach Milwaukee Packouts to. And I also have a Milwaukee Packout mount on the slide in front of the fridge that I carry a Milwaukee Packout backpack on, it functions as a get home pack if I am 4-wheeling solo in the middle of nowhere and have to abandon the Jeep and walk out. The storage drawer, slide, and overland shelf pretty much fill the back of a 2-door, while still allowing room for a comfy dog bed.

As a 2-door owner, that bottom shelf looks fantastic. For the top shelf, I keep looking for something that sits at the same height as the top of the rear door. Ultimately I would want something that creates sealed, locked compartment when the rear door is closed and locked. Most upper shelves I see look like they sit too high for that.

While not for the 2-door, I have been working on something similar. This isn't a perfectly weather-tight compartment, but I wanted to swap that for "features". This was the first test fit yesterday to make sure it is all going in the right direction. This is technically 3 separate "modules." A baseplate, enclosed sides, and then a load deck shelf that can come in and out quickly.

Amazing. Is this your own design and or fab work? Does the top deck slide straight out? Does the baseplate allow easy access to the cubby? I’m very interested in details and more pics showing the mechanics of it. Thanks

Yes, this is something I have been working on for my business Sherpa Equipment Co. and hope to release after some testing miles. The top deck will have 4 knobs for quick removal. It has a slot that requires it to move toward the rear seat to be removed. This prevents it from ever flying out of the Jeep if someone forgets to tighten their knobs down. But with the seats forward it will come right up and out.
The baseplate does have access to the lower cubby as well. That is where I have my air compressor mounted at the moment.

Outstanding! For my purposes it wouldn't need to be weather tight, just a tight enough fit that with the tailgate closed someone couldn't reach a hand in and help themselves to something in the back. I may have to go the DIY route myself since I also have a table on the tailgate so the fit would have to be adjusted. What you've got here looks great, though.

Great workmanship there. Could that be used with the hardtop in place, and just sandwich the thin aluminum between the top and the body tub?

So far this does work with the table I have on mine when closed. I could make a little plate that seals in the last couple of inches to the door as well.

The other shelf is designed to tie into the rear support brackets for our QDHD roof rack system. I have more info about some of that in my build thread.

While mine is not as cool as many here, I am pleased so for. I just need to finish it with carpet and test it out. The carpet arrived yesterday, but it was too late, and the spray paint on the last part was still drying.

My main issues with many of the aftermarket items out there for Packout mounting was
A) expensive (at least they seem expensive)
B) they didn't quite fit my needs/wants.

A - I'm frugal and feel I can make something cheaper, this is usually never the case, or at least not much cheaper when you take into account the time, BUT, I enjoy the projects. I am not a fancy wood worker, nor do I have a ton of special tools....nor patience, so sometimes the finish is not perfect, but it works considering I "wing it" and just improvise as I go.
B - My main issues are that our JLU is not a trail only rig, nor do we do a lot of Overlanding. I am more of a trail in Moab type, and I don't love keeping all that gear in the back, especially since this is my wife's DD. I wanted to be able to have a flat floor when I'm not usingit for trail duties

We will likely keep the 3 drawer packout in the back, since this holds our emergency kit and jumper cables and a few other odds and ends. I am hoping to find a good way to lock it down. I found the locks for UTV's that seem OK, but are not ideal....but that may be how we go. We usually only take the doors off, but I do want to take the top off this summer....but I can always just remove it if I feel unsure, or until I have a way to lock it down. I did utilize the stock tie downs on the 2 closest to the tailgate.

This is what I came up with. I will add more pics when I put the carpet on it, where I can take pics of how it looks overall.

I used the normal Packout base plates, they were cheaper then any metal ones I found online...but having gone through this, I may have paid for those out of simplicity....but $60 for 2 plates (with an extra half piece after cutting it) is a lot cheaper then roughly $160 for what I was seeing for a full plate and half plate most places.

I slid it forward enough that I can stack on top of either side and not hit the seat....this made the cubby access a little smaller, but still very managable. I am debating about hinging it (which would require adjustments since it blocks the packouts from sliding forward enough to come off the plate, or just using a few very strong magnets. pulling forward also gives between the packouts and the seat some nice storage that is out of the way for fluids or other things (which I plan on making a box that can be places there as well)

That looks awesome. Also wondering if it can be used with the hardtop on.

I use my Grandpa's 1948 Foot Locker from the US Army Air Corps. I would like to get a shelf above it, though.
