Hi Im new to these forums and this would be my first Jeep.

I’m inquiring about a 2021 Jeep Rubicon at a local dealership I found. I noticed few things that seem to be issues within this community so debating if I should buy it with these issues. It seems to have 2 cracks on the quarter panel seems and also I see some bubbling happening on 2 of the door hinges. It’s out of the factory 3 yr 36k mile warranty as it has 36.5k miles. Is the paint warranties longer than the bumper to bumper warranty?

Also upon looking underneath…I noticed what looks like a possible coating on certain pieces of the undercarriage. Can anyone tell me what this is or if it is something that could be a possible issue? I provided some pics.

Thanks in advance.

It's hard to tell but that coating could be a very generous (more like excessive) amount of Fluid Film, a rust inhibitor. If that's a Northeast Jeep it has remarkably little rust from road salt, which is what you would expect to see if Fluid Film was used.

Did you touch it? New Fluid Film is light brown. It never really dries and it does collect road grime if applied excessively. It will be waxy/greasy, not hard. It also wears off over time which is why you may be seeing it only in places shielded from weather and tire splash. You may be looking at an old, partially worn off, very excessive application of Fluid Film.

But don't take this as a definitive answer. I'd have to feel it and smell it to know for sure it's Fluid Film and not some kind of oil leak.

I do live in northeast and I think previous owner also lives up here. I did touch it and it felt like grease almost but I feel it was more dark brown. It Def didn’t feel like/smell like oil imo but I also don’t know what fluid film looks like or smells like either. there was no signs of a leak where the jeep was parked on the lot. Totally dry under on the ground.

We will see tomorrow morning in my garage as they let me take the jeep home for the night.

i would probably pass on that one. Corrosion warranty is 5 yrs 60k miles. it also has rear airbags which means someone was probably towing with it, maybe heavy.

That looks exactly what I would imagine an oil cooler leak that filled the valley under the intake manifold then overflowed down the back of the engine block, then ran down the transmission and blew all the way back.

This is Fluid Film. It's like a waxy grease that you spray on with an air compressor. It has a distinct smell but idk how to describe it to you. It becomes darker brown as it dries, like the bit on my finger that I took from the can rim. But it never fully dries, i could still squish and spread that bit on my finger.

If it is Fluid Film its a good thing. Aside from the very excessive messy application, its great for preventing rust and shows the previous ownert took extra steps to take care of it. The excessive fluid film is ugly but its doing no harm and is still preventing rust. Since it was applied excessively thick it has probably collected road grime along the way making it darker.

The corrosion could and will be a nightmare. Questionable oil leak and cracked seams. I would walk away.

Interesting I didn’t even realize this? I do know previous owner used it to camp as there is a rhino rack with a tent on the roof. Wondering if that is reason for airbags? But def also possibility of towing too I guess.

So I touched it this morning..looked exactly the same as on your finger and felt like you described.
No signs of any leaks on garage floor..so im guessing this could be the reason for all this mess underneath.

I see a lot have said stay away bc of the paint issues. Does the dealership/factory not correct the issue under warranty?

def caught my eye cuz I’ve literally owned 4 cars 3 brand new(Acura Honda 2 toyotas) and every one has Either had paint issues(Acura Honda) or I got a mailer claiming they could have paint issues(Toyota). But they all extended the warranty and/or all were corrected by dealerships.
Is jeep different when it comes to paint issues? ?

I have a 2021 JLUR and have the same bubbling around the door handles. The 5 year corrosion warranty is still good on mine. My dealer ok'd me getting an estimate from a body shop, but so far I haven't found any body shops that want to work with my dealer on a warranty claim.

Interesting I wonder why? Does your dealership have its own auto body shop? Or you rather use one you know?

my wife brought the jeep to a local dealership that has its own auto body and the owners son verified that it’s still within the five year 60,000 mile paint warranty also and said that it would be 100% covered if we bought the jeep so if we bring it back to them, they’ll take care of it u Dee the warranty claim. and it’s a jeep dealership so I would assume that they know a remedy on how to fix it.
He also took a peek under the Jeep just to verify there were no leaks or other red flags as I know some have mentioned there was a possibility of leaks and he said everything looked fine which was kinda reassuring. No signs of leaks and that the undercarriage looked fine also said it looked like it was a coating of some sort under there.

Yes, my dealership does not have a body shop. Look up Mopar Warranty Bulliten #D 23-04, it explains what the body shop needs to do to get it fixed.
