I am looking for tire recommendations for my Willy’s 21. Currently stock with 255/75/17 Firestone MT. Wanting to go less aggressive tread. Want to go slightly taller but not any wider. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mostly road and some seasonal road driving. Not much off-roading.

Look at the Destination AT, Falken Wildpeak AT3W, or the Bridgestone Dueler Revo. I have the same tires as you and the Toyo Open Country AT III is at the top of my list right now.

Going taller but not wider is tough. You can go with a 255/80/17, no a common size. It’s 33.1” tall. Most opt for the 285/70/17 at 32.7” tall.

Your current tires specs at 32.2”, so half an inch isn’t an issue.

Roughly how many miles you think you can get out of the Firestone MT?

I have a 21 Willys and just over 30,000 miles. The stock Wilderness M/T can probably go another 5k.

It sounds like you want a more road biased all terrain (A/T) tire vs M/T. Tire rack.com (or discount tire) are good sites for searching.

The stock 255/75/17 Destination M/T are 32 x 10 - Load Range C.

For taller you can go 255/80/17 which are 33 x 10 but they tend to only come in Load Range E which will be a much stiffer tire. They will work & you can run lower pressure but they will feel stiffer / hard on the road. I just noticed the Toyo Open Country may be available in that size in Load Range C so there may be others.

285/70/17 = 33 x 11 is a common choice that come in Load Range C or D. Depending on brand they typically run slightly narrower. For example the falken Wildpeak AT3 are 32.8 x 11.1. The Toyo Open Country and BFG All Terrain T/A KO2 are 32.8 x 11.5 (BFG are the stock tires/size on Rubicon and 24 Willys) and come in White sidewalk lettering if that’s important to you?

If you are looking for mostly on-road all terrain thee are a few options but they give up off-road traction and look less aggressive. Cooper Discoverer AT3, BFG Trail T/A, Yokohama Geolander A/T - tire rack

Another option is 285/75/17 = 34 x 11.3. There are a couple options in Load Range C. Toyo Open Country get good reviews and come in that size.

Weight is another consideration as heavier & taller sap power and increase braking effort. Weight varies by brand. The stock 755/75 M/T are 49 lbs a tire. The 285/75 Toyo Open Country are 59 lbs a tire. Obviously the 285/70 will be in the middle but it varies by brand..

At 23k miles they are starting to show quite a bit of wear. I’d give them another 6-8k miles before they would only be good for a farm truck.

I’m not going to wait that long as every day I dislike them more. By spring they will be replaced by all terrains.

All great suggestions. I got 45K out of my stock MT's. I would definitely look at the Bridgestone Revo-3's. Great tire for what you need. Got them on the wife's JK, and ran them on my Tacoma.

Take a peek at the Falken Wildpeak AT4W. The 255/80R17, or the 285/70R17 are now available. Much less aggressive than the M/T's you are currently running, but will still deliver in the traction department, and have a smoother, quieter ride. The 285/70R17 is a bit wider, but will work with your O.E. wheel.

I’ve been running the toyo open country for 5000 miles now and they are fantastic. I went with 285/75

You're limited to 33" you can shove a 295/70/17 or 34x10.50x17 on, but that's pushing it. Even then if you might have to worry every time you have to tun the wheels sharp, or go over anything more than a curb.

Why do you want to shove the biggest tires possible on with no lift? The 285/70/17s are the best choice.

Not trying to get the biggest tires I can. Just curious at what point they would rub. Don’t need anything huge. Was just wondering how close the 285/70 would be to rubbing

The 285s wont rub. That's been the experienced posted countless times on this site. My sister even put them on her Sport with no issues.

And, based on the post by @azwjowner , looks like 34x10.50s will fit.
