Doing much with a Jeep in public areas is pretty tough here in IA. There isn't much out there, as most all fun places to wheel are private. Most of my Jeep time is gravel road cruising, unless there is a club event.

The Loess Hills have a ton of Level B roads, which are not regularly maintained. Yeah, I could drive my minivan on these, but you can still have some fun. I did some of that last Monday.

If you live in IA or NE, this isn't a bad way to spend a day. I was also able to do some hiking in the state park and fishing in a small pond.

It's as good as it gets for IA!

Fortunately I'm right across the river from this place...
UTV Rental | Larsen UTV Rentals | United States
I've taken my General there a couple times...
They started having a Jeep (and Bronco) day this year, and it was so popular they are going to do it a couple times a year...

Does anyone know if "600 acres" - Army Core of Engineers area is still open near Coralville? That used to be our go-to spot when I live in Newton

It’s now 147 acres and is only for motorcycles and ATV’s under 1000cc

We lost 15000 acres of forest that was open to the public to a large organization looking to boost their carbon credits. They are looking to purchase another 20000 acres next year. They bought 10000 acres two years ago in a neighboring town. Every time they buy more land they close off all access to rivers, lakes and ponds. They gate all the roads and remove all the culverts, no access at all.

I lived in Iowa for several years. Met a red-haired girl out there on a road trip and married her. I lived in Marshalltown, then Grinnell, and finally in Eldora.

Lots of good people out there. But having grown up in Idaho camping, hunting, hiking, fishing, and off-roading in true wilderness areas less than an hour from my home, Iowa was a shock.

You can't hunt unless you know a farmer, and back then you had to use a shotgun or muzzleloader. You could fish, but the fish tasted like mud. Every time I went to public lands, the public was there, lol.

I hated it.

I moved back home after the red-haired girl and I divorced and now enjoy the outdoors nearly every weekend.

Midwesterners are great folks, but can't comprehend the vastness of our playgrounds out here, lol.

My brother lives in ID. I really want to bring my Jeep out there sometime when visiting. I lived in CA for 5 years, but was into muscle cars back then. I brought a 55 F100 back to IA with me when I moved back.

Didn’t know what I was missing for off-roading until now.

Gotta watch out for those red-heads. :)

Some of us definitely comprehend it. Once my youngest graduates, the plan is to move somewhere where I can see mountains from my windows. I like Iowa for a lot of reasons, but unless your outdoor recreation is cycling, everything is pretty locked down.

Also, Nice Jeep OP @svtrit, next time you make a trip to Loess Hills, hit me up, maybe I'll tag along.
