So I’ve owned a couple JLs (2019 Sahara and 2021 rubicon) both 3.6l, both great. Currently I’m looking for a new one. I can’t help but notice the price on 4xes is pretty crazy right now. I’ve looked at a few with 20k ish miles that have stickers near 80k new selling in the low 30s. I’m saying on average this is 7-8k less than I’m seeing on similar non ev jeeps.

I do understand they have some issues but the current one I’m looking at still has 60 months, 75k miles left on the battery/hybrid warranty. Which leads me to think what is there to be afraid of?
Downtime I guess, it will be my daily driver but I have another vehicle so I’m not terribly worried about that either.

I don’t tend to keep things 5+ years and don’t drive a lot of miles. I would most likely sell it before the warranty ended anyway.

Is this an absolutely terrible idea?

Not really?

If you have a good one, they're great; if you have a bad one, at least they have a great warranty?

(I am fortunate to have one that's had no problems so far at 22k miles, of which a bit less than half has been electric.)

Buying a used one is tricky business.

Check, it seems many of these 4xe are high mileage fleet rentals, some can be lemons people gave up. Ultimately people that have no issues, and like and benefit from the PHEV system are keeping them, they are basically city vehicles, you don't want to take them on long distance trips.

Factor in battery replacement downtime, weeks to months, Jeep seems to be providing rentals.

$7,000-$8,000 because of the government subsidies.

If you can benefit significantly from the PHEV system it might be worth your while, if you are just going off of price vs gaser, and will use it like a gaser, best to pass on it.

Huh….you guys aren’t making me feel very good about this.

I’m not looking at this because it’s a ev. I’m looking at it because it’s a 3 year old rubicon with tons of options for 30 grand instead of 40+ for the gas equivalent. Really the ev part is an afterthought that I don’t care a ton about. I do drive a lot of short trips (14 mile round trip to work) so I guess there are Benifits, but really my daily driving events use so little fuel that even at current prices it’s not a huge issue.

Then pretty much every “jeep trip” I take I would load on a trailer and tow it. I have a van that Ive built into a camper and it’s become easier to just to tow the jeep then have to drive 2 vehicles. Although the extra weight of the ev jeep means I’d have to buy a new trailer for sure so that’s an issue too.

Honestly I sold my 21 because I wanted a 392. (And I got an offer I couldn’t refuse) I see the Willy’s ones are out but I’m still struggling with the 70k part. It’s just a lot for a car, then used 392s are still holding value pretty well. Something in the year and mileage range I’m hoping for are still mid 60s.

I guess maybe it’s time to keep looking for a non ev or suck it up and order a 392 Willy’s.

thanks for everyone’s input.

I got a 21 JLUR with 50k miles on it for maybe 25k (before trade) if I remember right. Granted, It’s a stripped down spec, halogen headlights and cloth seats but does have the alpine system and hard top. That’s what I wanted though because I got tired of all the cameras and stuff in my civic. Everything else in that price range was double the mileage or heavily modified. Hell, I’m seeing a lot of higher mileage ones than mine going from 30+. Do not be tempted by the deals on 4xEs, you’re gonna pay for it down the line.
