Hi All,

There is probably already a post about this topic, but I couldn’t find it from a simple google search. So here’s my issue.

I have a 2018 JLU Sport with a 2.5” lift running 35s.

I just hit 45k miles and started to notice my wheel shaking whenever I’m braking at highway speeds. Is this an indication that I need new brakes and rotors already?

I just did an oil change and tire rotation at 45k and the brakes looked fine. So the only other thing I can think is that the rotors are bad or the tires are out of balance.

Any help is much appreciated!

Very high chance the rotors are warped. They can be resurfaced if they have enough thickness tolerance, otherwise replace. This issue can be caused by improperly torqued lug nuts on aluminum wheels, but it can also just happen. It’s not wheel balance — that would occur at all times at highway speeds, not only while braking.

Since you're running 35s and are probably going to replace the rotors, I'd opt for HD brake replacement.

I had the same problem in my Saturn SC years ago. Thought it was the rotors but turned out to be tie rod ends.

*Edit - In my experience, rotor issues tend have a pulsating feel rather than a vibration/shake.

I agree on the opinion that it is most likely warped (front) rotors and I'm doing a set on my Tundra today. I've heard the "improperly torqued" argument for a while, but I'm not overly certain "how" improperly torqued wheels will warp a rotor as they are torqued to the hub behind them which is hardened steel and most likely extremely true.

brakes "looked" fine but did you check inside versus outside pad wear? In my experience this issue is typical of a stuck caliper that isn't floating properly.

Steering wheel shaking while braking points to your front rotors being warped. Replace them and move on. 45k is pretty good for the factory brakes.
