i just noticed that Gladiator has this extra piece of steel bolted to frame just on the driver side of frame behind front wheel. Does anyone know what this is for?

It was added in 2022 as a crash mitigation measure to prevent the passenger wheel from going under that side and causing a rollover or injuring the feet of the passenger or something like that, i can't remember the exact details. basically it helped improve a crash rating.

here is a video about removing it

I appreciate quick response, i figured is was a bandaid added after design, they should have at least put it on left side as well.

Here's an article. Many videos exist.

I was wrong about the passenger wheel 'tripping' the Jeep. Not sure how that bracket helps - perhaps it skids along the ground.

The small offset crash is something that the engineers dread. There's things like someone redesigning a bracket in the engine bay that is more rigid and then there is a knock on effect making the crash worst. On the other hand one vehicle I know aced the small offset test completely - the only damage was the bumper, fender and side mirror. In that case just by chance the vehicle defected sideways and most of the impact was avoided.

But then we have to be aware of the bigger picture - vehicles are a lot safer than they used to be.
