Instead of running I 70 all the way to Grand Junction, thinking about taking US HWY 412 on my way to Colorado next month, pick up near southwest corner of Missouri and jump back off somewhere under Colorado and wander up to Ouray Colorado maybe by way of Creede.

ANY EXPERIENCE?, Road condition? Dont miss this….. etc.

I can't help with all of it, but the oklahoma portion is pretty boring if you don't want to detour. Gloss Mountain state park outside of Fairview is pretty cool, but not almost everywhere in Colorado cool.

The Great Salt Plains is a short detour north. It's interesting if you have children with you, digging selenite crystals is cool.

Stillwater is a short detour off 412, Wrestling hall of fame. Oklahoma State University and Eskimo Joe's are all there..

Depending on when you go, US50 just west of Gunnison is closed, so you might have to go through Durango instead of Creede.

(E) That's a really nice area, and worth the journey - but will add a few more extra hours, so be sure to enjoy the journey rather than racing to the destination.

I study Native American Indian history a lot, any musems along that line? Historical sites?

For Native history, Mesa Verde is an hour or so detour from that path.

For general area history, the Durango RR is a fun excursion. There are also some mining and other nature museums in that area.

There's also a lot of hiking etc out there.

Drivetoadventure,

you summed up my reason to take route 412, to enjoy the journey, new country to me, done I 70 many times.

we have done mesa verda, Durango train ride and museum, and at mesa Vera we includEd the tours with the ladder climbs out. Pretty interesting.

those Mesa Verde pics might be lost to photo bucket price gouge, I refused to pay.

There is a museum in Enid called the Cherokee Strip Heritage Center.. It's more land run oriented, but still interesting. Tahlequah is the seat of the Cherokee Nation, and there are tons of cool museums in the area.

Picketwire Canyon Complex outside of La Junta Colorado is cool too. Driving 4x4 tour of dinosaur fossils in the walls. You have to arrange a tour guide in advance.

There is a civil war battlefield outside of Big Cabin, near Grand Lake of the Cherokees, but it's on I-44, so if you are coming in that way, it's right on your route.
