I just called Tread Lightly, and you are correct. Just being a past member (even though membership lapsed two years ago) will make the code active immediately when "renewing" my membership.

For anyone who’s wondering:

The control number issued from TreadLightly has the buyer’s name on it. If the buyer’s name does not match the buyer or is NOT the buyer’s spouse, it CAN NOT be used.
