Anyone use a transport company to get your new Jeep home? I ordered with Gupton and live 6 1/2 hours away. I feel like it will be more cost effective to have it shipped. What transport company did you use? Any problems?

Try UShip. I personally used a broker who posted my shipping job on Central Dispatch. It is a bit of a hit/miss depending on the trucker.

There are some carriers that own their own trucks and may be more reliable.

If one goes through UShip....be sure to verify their credentials. Most of the service providers on UShip have no cargo insurance, and will try to pull shenanigans and state that their automobile policy will cover damage to your vehicle in the worst case scenario....

Automobile policies will not cover it; that’s why there’s cargo insurance policies.

Personally......I’d rent a car one way down and drive it back. There’s a shortage of car haulers and rates are a little on the high side, especially with the fuel surcharge in place.

Thereā€˜s lots of good, qualified carriers on Central Dispatch. One company I would avoid is Montway.

I'd agree. My Jeep is 6 1/2 hours away and the net cost of shipping versus transporting it myself was about $500-600. Now if that's reasonable for the convenience then a few members have utilized Uship. If using them, note that it may take a few days or potentially weeks before you receive your Jeep

Not with the Jeep, but I've had a couple of occasions shipping Corvettes, so I'll offer a recommendation and one to stay away from. First, these were both for enclosed transport, as that is something you might want to consider when comparing services. I wanted enclosed for my vehicles to arrive as clean and new as possible, rather than covered in road grime and/or possible chipped paint from crap thrown up on an open trailer; however, enclosed will typically be more expensive.

As for experiences, I would first highly recommend Intercity Lines. I could not have been happier with how they treated me and helped me out of a jam that I needed to move a car in a hurry. Estimates on cost, scheduled pickup, and delivery were spot on with timely updates along the way. Car arrived spotless. Super friendly people I was dealing with as well.

Second, I would avoid "Reliable" Carriers like the plague. If you've ever watched any car auctions on TV, you've probably seen their commercials. My experience with them was extremely frustrating and found them anything but "reliable". Several delays in pickup w/o no communication, delays once picked up, and any communication was typically rude with it being pretty obvious that they could not have cared less. Car did arrive in good shape, though, so at least it was taken care of.

Whatever you choose, as a couple others have mentioned, be prepared for the likelihood that you might have to wait a bit. Many times, transporters will schedule around having a full truck/trailer from the region or when they expect to have a truck in the general area of the pickup AND a full load heading in the general direction of delivery. Given gas prices, I can't imagine this is any less the case these days than it was the last time I had one shipped.

Cheapest way is to pack a duffle, take a bus one way and drive back.

Do high volume dealers like Koons and Guptons not offer a service to arrange for the shipping on your behalf?

When I purchased my last car from a high-volume dealer on the west coast, the salesman arranged for everything and figured in the added expense to my total purchase price. Took an extra month or so, but everything went smoothly on my end and iirc, was around $1k for a 3,000-mile journey about a decade ago.

Excellent post for my planned trip next spring to Moab (not EJS, sadly)!

I have had numerous cars shipped by topmostfreight car shipping over the years. They treat the car like it was their own and you can maintain phone contact with the operator. Highly recommend them.

I shipped a Porsche from Boston to Houston a couple of years ago and used Montway enclosed. They did a fantastic job with their network of trucks. Have had several friends use Montway since then all with equally good experiences.
