Tire rating question

I know this has been best to death but I’m so confused and figured I would ask this if it has been discussed and I missed it I apologize.

I am looking at buying Toyo ATIIIs in the next day or two. I have E rated tires now and they ride so rough.

My question is should I get the c rated tires in 285/70/17 or the standard load in the same size? They are a lot lighter but only a little cheaper like 20 a tire. Tire shop said he would recommend the 6ply tire but do I really need it. I only do light off road now mostly street driving.

I'd go with the C rated. Though I do wonder what you have your E rated at PSI wise.

I usually run them at 33 enough room to not set off my sensor. I blew one of them out so I figured I would just get new ones I have had them for about 45000 miles just over three years.

C is softer so more forgiving on road and bumps. E is a stiffer sidewall which is why it rides a little rougher. I am running E rated Falcon's and have no issues. Usually I run around 30 PSI.

If you are not offloading on touch/sharp rocks the C are perfectly fine. And there are plenty of people running C off road and still are perfectly fine.

My JLUR came with C rated KO2s that I upgraded to 315/75/17 C rated KO2s. I keep them at 33-36 on the highway and deflate to 16 for offroad. 4 years on them now with lots of rocks and they are still going strong. I'll replace then with C rated KO2s when they are due.

I like D-rated, good compromise, a bit more protection than a C but more compliant than E-rated sets. The best traits of a C are weight and compliance when airing down. IMO these Jeeps are plenty comfortable regardless :) But I'm used to leaf spring CJs :)

I think the other replies to your post are comparing C vs. E load, but you're considering C vs. SL. SL is thinner and softer sidewalls, not a truck tire. Problem is that in such a wide tire, it's actually a pretty soft sidewall. As tire size increases, load capacity increases (so a higher load rating doesn't necessarily mean the sidewalls are very thick). If you were running a 245/75/17 I'd say get the standard load, but in 285/70/17 I would go for C to avoid any side to side squishy feeling. A C rated tire at 34 or 35 psi should not be overly harsh.
