What about the “Gladiator”?

The Gladiator name was dropped from the J10 Pickup in the 70s, but in the 80s it was called Honcho, a Japanese word. Good catch!

Funny, cause when I hear the name Wrangler, first thing I think of is the Jeep, not the jeans.

Now when I told the wife I was going to buy a Jeep, she immediately thought I was talking about a Grand Cherokee, and started pointing out sales and deals, even after many times of my saying "Not Jeep the Brand, Jeep the vehicle, the Wrangler".

Her response, I kid you not, "Which one is the Wrangler?"

And the next generation of the Cherokee after that spawned yet another vehicle called the Commanche.

In 2018, it's dreadful to think about. But I guess that was a different time.

Surprised that the ACLU and other groups havent come down on Jeep for using Cherokee and other names. If North Dakota can be sued out of using the Fighting Sioux name so could jeep. The only reason that the Redskins get to keep it is that therewas no Redskin Tribe. Florida Seminols only got to keep using it because they have an agreeme t with the tribe fundi g tribal students and other tibal projects.

Looks like the jeans came before the jeep. About 40 yrs before jeep used the name.

The American Cowboy, a subset of which was a Wrangler, came before the Jeep too. For all anyone knows, ranchers probably don’t think much of the Wrangler moniker.

I usually just call it a Jeep. I use Wrangler for clarification if needed.

I'm assuming you're talking about the SJ Cherokee that was based off of the Wagoneer but a separate model? The SJ Cherokee was discontinued and the XJ Cherokee (and comanche) and the Grand Wagoneer (A separate model from the SJ Cherokee) continued into the 80s and 90s.

up here, they couldn't actually call the YJ or TJ a wrangler, because chevy owned that name for their pick up trucks.
it wasn't until the JK came out that they could market it as a wrangler here. but we still refer to the YJ and TJ a wrangler.

I've never liked the name Wrangler either but like others have mentioned, I usually refer to them as Jeep TJ or Jeep JL etc. I call my Cherokee an XJ too. Eventhough I like the name Cherokee.

The big difference is, Jeep asked tribe representatives for permission.
