I'd like to know what the insurance paid you for the fire and what you owed on the Jeep?
Any out of pocket expenses?
Will your insurance go up?

I haven't got the insurance yet. My Jeep was paid off. I typically pay cash for vehicles although I do owe a little on the new Jeep I'll pay off in March when we get a bonus. I'm not sure if my insurance will go up or not. So far I haven't seen a change but they are still working on the insurance claim so we'll see.

So far out of pocket expenses have just been a few things for the new Jeep. If I were to do most of the things that my Jeep had without the lift and tires it would be around $10,000. I doubt I'll do that all at once but rather a few things at a time. I get $400 a month for my Jeep fund so I'll have to save up a few months and then also use the bonus in March to do the rest of it.

For those that asked I don't know what caused the fire. It overheated and then poof. My Father-in-law thinks that whatever caused it to overheat so fast was the cause of the fire also. When the engine gets that hot it tends to warp which then allows oil to come out which could have ht the hot turbo and ignited but I just don't know.

I loved my old Jeep. We were really in sync if that makes sense. It had 156,000 miles on it. I'm retired so those are all fun miles. It put a smile on my face every time I drove her. I have to admit though my smile is a little bigger when I drive the 392 :)

Now I need to figure out what car to get my wife. I'm leaning towards a Jetta but haven't decided yet. Any suggestions?
Sorry about your Jeep - that sucks, but that's a helluva replacement!

After mine burned to the ground (I'll show a pic of the old and new for those that missed it) I replaced it with a 392 in Sarge Green. This thing is a beast. It's almost scary fast when trying to accelerate around a corner. I absolutely love it!

It feels good to have a Jeep again. I know mine only burned down a week ago but I've really missed having a Jeep in the garage. I think I'll keep it stock for a little while. I know, I know, famous last words :)

We have to hear the story now.
I don't really know what happened. I got gas on a Thursday night and ran out of gas on the way to work Friday. Saturday afternoon, driving down the road, going slightly downhill, I looked in the rear view mirror (merging with traffic) and saw what I thought was the reflection from my brake lights. Abouth the time I thought "Wow, those are really bright", I could smell gas so strong it was like someone threw it in my face, and the next thing I know flames are pouring in through the holes in the floorboard and through doors (they were off). The black vinyl (or whatever the material was) around the shifters basically liquified, I think I noticed that because the engine wouldn't shut off and I was downshifting, trying to choke it off. I was able to jump out before it hit a telephone pole and exploded, the hood blew off. I guess I blew the fuel line, don't know how. That was in 97, I still get a little jumpy for just a second or two when I smell a lot of gas or exhaust when sitting in traffic.

Wow, That's quite the story. I'm glad you made it out at least.... That's got to be terrifying and I understand why you are jumpy around gas. I was at least out of my vehicle when it caught fire which I am very grateful for. Glad you are still in the Jeep club still!

Jon,

I have an older TDI Jetta that I bought new in late December 2009, 2010 model year and 2nd year of the VW diesel back in USA market. Based on how things like the not-so premium interior is falling apart (headliner, door panel coverings, etc), Diesel-Gate, and the well-deserved reputation for dealer service (for over 30 years-Here, Jeep, hold my beer), I would maybe look to another brand. I still have the car, and hope to get the little diesel past 300K miles, but with all the above, if I had it to do over, I'd not buy VW again. Back in 2015, the dealer accidentally crushed my roof with their bay door. They fixed it, but the paint started peeling back a couple of years ago. Both times I went back for service, I told them to inspect it and get their body shop to set up an appointment to fix it. No dice.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look elsewhere. My wife doesn't really care that much so we are just going to go drive a bunch on July 3rd and see which one she likes.
