Yep, I have always said if I spotted the right one I would grab up either a 70s model Bronco, or a Willys MB. Well as the past 10 years have gone by, I now have 3 Jeeps to tinker with and its the handful I have and I'm content. If I had the previously mentioned vintage units and did a complete restore there is slim chance to none that I would take them out for serious wheeling. Too afraid to hurt em. Our Jeeps do it all, just a bit less nostalgic.
70’s—Bad idea— (except 70)— 72 = gutless smog motor, 70= good motor, 71, not sure, most took a power hit although nothing like 72. Hemis didn’t, but my racer cousin said it was due to a multiple carburetor exemption eliminated in 72.

If I restored either of the vehicles I mentioned nothing much about the engines or actual drive trains would be original equipment. I remember a CJ5 A friend of my brother had with a 327 Chevy in it. Inline six's. Many options. Even some small diesel engines.

My 5 had an L79-Muncie from a wrecked Vett. Required upgrading Everything. HD Willys truck TC, boxing the frame, driveshafts, race gears and axles ( held until blower), Detroit lockers, no longer available Warn OD for hwy speeds, upgrading fuel system and cooling, installed lift —V8 and winch were heavy, plus to fit 33’s, add power steering after extra weight. Except for the fender wells being cut for headers, the body was the only stock part left. It wasn’t cheap, even at late 70’s prices. But— it would go anywhere, crawl with the best, and outrun all but top tier big blocks stoplight to stoplight. (Even nosed a couple of them in short stop to stop) it was great fun!

Edit: Now I see where the "second 392" falls into line LOL

I know that had to be some good fun in a CJ. Had a few older pick ups that I played around with back in the late 80s and early 90s. Small window 67 Chevy fleet side. 454 / 468, Crower and Isky 292 cam polished lifter valley HV oil pump and deepsump windage tray, Team G intakes Holley 920 DP went down to 850 sprayed it NO2. Turbo 400 reverse valve body with tungston sprags 4000 stall converter. Strange 456s narrowed Tubbed with Sticky Mickeys. Nearly got killed in in it....LOL
A Munci 4 sp in an old raggedy El Camino with a 383 stroker was another fun story. It was my favorite to enter the local burnout contests.......LOL Never won but that wasn't the point anyway.....?

My business took over my life so shelved and sold off all my goodies. For years not much fun then enter the 2013 JKU. never looked back,,, well not too often anyway.

My passion- spent my formative years in NHRA pits where the alcohol, nitro, and burning rubber fumes permanently altered my DNA. (cousin raced A/A) last engine in my CJ5 was an ~700HP 6/71 blown 350. Traded my 1 of 500 (eng ser #HP360) 69 GTX for a Harley when we lost it’s minimum required 100 octane pump gas, still accelerating at 170mph when the front end achieved lift off (3 attempts) prior was a 66 (only) L79 Nova SS. (stolen) Blown 454 Sanger V drive. Car is a GC SRT, Trackhawk if available in 15. There is no cure.
