Sorta hijacking this to ask:

what would I have to do to help my jeep take bigger hits?

im looking to build a 2 door for 24 hours of Appalachia, there is plenty of technical terrain and crawling, but I want to help my jeep deal with hitting rocks and crosscuts at higher speeds then the average crawler
Bigger shocks, preferably with reservoirs for extra oil capacity. 2.5" or bigger.

Shocks with adjustable compression damping will help. But the main thing that is needed is more up travel in your suspension.

Would you focus on hydraulic bumpstops or shocks first?

I want to run one bone stock first, to get an idea of what I need to do

Shocks for sure. Hydraulic bumpstops don't do anything 99% of the time and are only use on the bigger hits at speed. Shocks are an immediately felt change everywhere at every speed.

Get a cheap used 2 door compact pickup truck if you want a pre runner. Drive like there is no tomorrow. Abandon it on the spot when it gets totaled.

Shocks are probably the biggest bang for the buck upgrade, even for a stock Rubicon (next to tires). It's easy to appreciate the value of 2 or 3 inches of lift, but factory Rubicon shocks can compress 2+ inches of travel just coming down off an 8 - 10 inch ledge or rock if you arent careful. With good shocks you can make it through trails without scraping and banging the undercarriage, on trails where a stock shock would definitely bang and scrape.

No to mention the factory shocks fading away when the fluid heats up.
