I'm starting to see retailers state that they'll have a new "tariff" line item on their receipts.
So next step will be to start labeling the shell with the product make in USA. We now have this in most store now up here.

False. One of the best recent examples is providing incentives for US auto manufacturers to engineer, source, manufacture, and assemble EV's here in the US. We did that without totaling the global apple cart.

Please share with us a time when tariffs and punitive authoritarianism hasn't ultimately wrecked economic growth.

Which means higher expense. Adding overtime shifts means higher cost vehicles. Idling factories in Mexico means higher costs. Using American labor to build cars means higher expense. These are companies watching out for their bottom line right now, and desperately hoping for cooler heads to prevail.
Wasn't working. Plans were obviously in place to move this offshore as well. I retired from a Chinese company that was once a US company. I am quite familiar with what was really going on. Nothing was stopping the past momentum except believe it or not Elon Musk since Tesla would not source us without US manufacturing.

Why do people seem to think the status quo was OK?? Why do so many seem to have forgotten the hundred's of thousands of jobs lost over the last four decades, the closures of so many businesses and erosion of tax base within so many towns and cities. Having spent a career in the auto component supplier industry I witnessed so much of this first hand. To be wholly dependent upon foreign nations for critical goods is OK? Do people really think this can be reversed overnight without some sacrifice?? Continuing to find the cheapest product through low cost labor countries was easy but only drove us further into a consumer country status living in our glass tower waiting to shatter at any moment. I'm not sold on all the current actions as being optimal but at least someone finally has a vision and is willing to act on it.
Because the media says so.
This public manipulation and the resulting outcry is why the politicians wouldn’t make this move before. They didn’t want to alienate their voting base and lose their money supplying donors. Things were a lot easier for them to keep things as they were.
Now we have somebody who doesn’t need those donors and the scavengers are stirring up populist chaos to try and stop him from leveling the playing field.

What does $100 million buy these days, anyway? A banana? Maybe an orange.

The countries not being hit with tariffs are interesting
