Shopping for tires

I have 2019 2 door wrangler that needs new tires. The OEM size, what I have been running are 245/75R17. I'm looking for a tire that will work on and off road. I'm probably 70% on the hwy and the balance of gravel and dirt road. I have been considering going to the 285/70R17 but local tire dealer suggested that I look at a 265/70R17. I found a web site called Tiresize.com which list the diameters and with of the sizes. I'm sure these are average size between manufactures.

The 245/75R17 is 31.5" Diameter and 9.6" wide,
265/70R17 is 31.6" diameter and 10.4" wide
285/70R17 is 32.7" diamerter and 11.2" wide

So the question is, how will the road handling be effected by going to the 265's or the 285"s? Will I notice a differece? I know the 285's look great but would I need to change the light above the spare tire to adjust for the larger size? Will the standard Tailgate hinges handle a heavier tire?

What brand and style of tire would you go with. I have been looking at the Falkin Wildpeak AT/3, I would like a tire that works well on the road as well as snow and ice. Our home is on a hill that is faily steep. We don't get a lot of snowbut it does snow and will stay around for several day.

Do you want taller, wider or both? You can also go with a 255/75/17 (32.1”) or 275/70/17 (32.2”).

Any of the sizes up to 285/70/17 will fit your stock Jeep with no lift needed. The Falken Wildpeak AT3W is a great all around choice.

Most people have no issues going to 285s. The spare should fit with no or little mod to the 3rd brake light.

I would avoid a load range E tire, as it will provide a ride much more firm/rough than you are used to.

A nice way to upgrade tires is get a set of New Rubicon take off’s from your local classifieds. The 285 tires will fit nice with no lift & spare will fit with no changes. I’d recommend finding a set with the BFG All terrains. They drive & wear nice. Here is our 2dr Sport with Rubicon take off’s.

@MorrieC many forum members go with the 265/70R17 due to popularity. You would have more options available to you and if weight and mods are something you are concerned with, that's a solid choice. The Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is also a solid choice with its 3PMS rating and mild freeway mannerisms. Hope you don't mind us shooting you a DM.

i ran stock rubi wheels/tires on my stock sport for a little while, till i got rubi suspension. it looked, handled, and rode great. and you can get smokin deals for take off sets.

i ran stock rubi wheels/tires on my stock sport for a little while, till i got rubi suspension. it looked, handled, and rode great. and you can get smokin deals for take off sets.

Word on the street is that the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W (winter/wet/wear) that’s been on the market for nearly 8 years at this point is being discontinued soon for an all new tire to replace it in 2024. I don’t have any other info on the new tire, but I am betting it’ll be called the AT-X. Hopefully they keep that rubber compound because the current tire is perfect.

Look into mickey thompson baja legend exp. It's a hybrid tire that features both all terrain lugs and mud terrain lugs. Rides smooth on road and grips offroad.
I have a set, I live at 7000' so I encounter a lot of snow ice and rain. They do well. I just don't recommend heavy difficult rock crawling with sharp rocks.
