Vehicle(s)
2019 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Saharah
Vehicle details:
  • 2019 V6 JLU Sahara
  • ~59000 miles
  • I bought an Extended warranty, good for 5 years / +75,000 miles post the original 3/36k
  • I'm the only owner the car has ever had.
Check engine light came on and I used a scanner i had purchased at the store. The code reads P0401. Took it to the dealer. Arrived at 615am on a Tuesday. I was first in line.

The service guy at Bomnin Jeep in Miami, FL told me I'd have to leave the Jeep for up to 4 days before a proper diagnostic test can be done. At that point, an assessment would be made on what needs to happen and if any additional costs would be incurred or shipping/labor time. The same service guy came to the car and scanned it. His scanner confirmed the P0401 code and saw that it was reporting a "stored" status. He said a stored status means that the value is stored but the issue is not active.

His recommendation was to continue driving the vehicle for a few days in hopes that the check engine light would turn off by itself in a few days. He said that if it doesn't turn off to bring the car in car in and preferably on a Monday morning early (like I did) because Mondays is when they typically get their biggest load of service requests. His scanner did pick up electrical issues that my scanner did not find. He said that was more concerning and was worried that one of the batteries may need to be replaced.

Meanwhile, the car drive feel is perfect and all electrical devices working perfectly.

Thoughts on this? Is his advice to drive for a few days and see if goes away, normal? Should I go to another dealer?
My concern is that an oxygen sensor is faulty and that I may be causing the engine unnecessary and extra wear and tear.

Was that a Jeep extended warranty or aftermarket? Typically the factory extended warranty is as stated, 5 years, 75,000 miles from in-service date, not added onto the factory warranty terms. Not sure how aftermarket ones run.

Also wonder since that seems to be an EGR code if that might also be covered under the longer emissions warranty but have no idea.

Why do you think it's an O2?

I believe the EGR test has specific requirements, temperature, speed, etc. That's likely not a random error, it's caused by something, even if it clears.

I don't think I'd expect it to cause additional damage, worse case poor performance in the interim.

I replied earlier to this thread but after a few minutes, I deleted my post as I knew my post would fuel other posts... and well, I just did not want to be bothered replying to... as, I'm so sick of dual battery related crapola posts.

Anyway, depleted 12v / greatly vacillating 12v, to the EGR control solenoid can be the trigger so to speak, such a code.

With that said, the Service Writer mentioned to the OP that he/she was concerned about the batteries. Could be the 2 batteries are iffy and the iffy 12v out by them is the culprit in regard to this situation.

I would have the dealership eval the JL since it is apparently under warranty. I would talk to the Service Manager and politely ask that along with other testing that each battery be "load tested" and that a copy of the results be given to the vehicle owner... this way the owner knows the batteries were bot separated and load tested and not just say charged.

Very good point, and certainly a possibility. Low voltage can fault in almost every system.
