I’m looking at these Roam rock sliders on facebook marketplace. Not too concerned with scratches, will probably rattle can them anyways. But what are the thoughts on the rust around the bolts?

Yeah, that's all surface rust, I can't imagine it has penetrated enough to make any significant damage.

I got Roam sliders, have had them a long time. I redid the power coating on them a couple years ago and at that time replaced the hardware with stainless steel bolts. A little brushing around those bolt holes and you will be fine.

That rust pales in comparison to what the rocks are gonna do… 🤷‍♂️
Here’s my strange reasoning. Rocks scrape the paint (or rust) off right down to new shiny metal. Then a quick shot of primer and paint and do it all over again. In that scenario you earned it. In the case above they were just neglected.

Do your best with a wire brush or wheel to remove all rust before painting, or your paint will bubble and not adhere to the metal. Definitely look into new hardware sooner than later. I don’t like any rust on a fastener if I can avoid it.

Use the rust as leverage to get a better deal on the price. As far as any worries about the rust, IMO it's not a big deal.

After you clean them up and hit them with a rattle can, matte black matches a lot of the Jeep factory metal and plastic pieces. Hit it with matte clear. It adds extra protection and further prevents surface scratching or rust. That's what we do on our stuff in the shop. Rails, steps, steel bumpers, etc. Doesn't need to be automotive 2K clear, rustoluem matte clear from the big box keeps a factory matte look with added protection.
