What are the deltas between the standard Rubicon and Recon Rubicon? What does the extra money buy you?

Tires and wheels you will replace. Bumpers that you probably will replace. 4cyl engine.....uh....no. Grey grille that will "look" good depending on your color choice. Everything else that normally comes with a Rubicon.

I still think they wasted an opportunity to name the plug-in hybrid the recon... they could have given it special software that plays up the military heritage of the jeep. “Recon mode” would be when you run it on battery power only, like when you need to conduct reconnaissance. You know, when it’s important to be silent. There could be an option in the navigation app to display your coordinates in MGRS (military grid reference system).

Then again I also thought the Call of Duty JK should have been a technical with no rear seats and a .50 cal machine gun mount, so what do I know

This is inaccurate. ^

If you were to build a Rubicon with the options listed below, you would spend $5630. Buying the Recon, you get the options for $2755. Here's another link:

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30458744/2020-jeep-wrangler-rubicon-recon-edition-leaked/

Here, I made a chart for a better understanding (This is for the 2020 MY. Not sure about 2021):

X = StandardRubiconRubicon Recon
LED LightsX
Tailgate ReinforcementX
MOAB Rock RailsX
2.0L E-TQNot AvailableX
8-Speed AutoX
Steel Bumpers w/Front LoopX
Red Seat BeltsX
Black GrillX
Headlight InsertsX
Leather DashX
Body Color FendersX
Black HardtopX

Great info except for two things.

I've seen plenty Recons on AutoTrader for sale that do not have Body Color Fenders.

Attached pic has black fenders and a soft top

The dealer likely ordered it that way to make it cheaper to sell. I'm sure the dealer has the ability to delete certain options that are included. That leaves the package open to orders where people want to customize their Recon order.

Good info though. Good to keep an eye out for these things for anyone looking for one.

IMO, Recon’s main drawback is that you have to give up the V6. Despite many 2.0T owners being happy with that motor, the inability to get the V6 makes Recon a non-starter for many others.

Honestly, I don’t understand why FCA limits Recon to just the 2.0T. Everything else can be added: the steel bumpers, the rock rails, the black wheels, the decals; unfortunately, not the motor. That’s one key thing missing.

I had to order my Recon’s body-colored fenders, otherwise they would have been black.

The Recon made sense for me because I wanted the steel bumpers, rails (they make a great step), LEDs, and I love the red seatbelts. I wasn’t sure about the black grille, but I like it with my KCs.

Looks nice, for sure. I like the orange and black.

I'm sure FCA changed some of the Recon package items from when that Car and Driver article was written. I'm sure it'll change every year.

Can you not get the recon with the diesel option?
Not positive but believe you can’t order Recon any longer. It was a 2020 only I thought.

The fenders were confusing when I ordered my Recon. I went through FCA corporate to order it (buyback replacement) and verified a couple times that I needed to order the fenders.

I do love the 2.0 eTorque engine.
