Removing AC vent trim?

Has anyone figured out how to remove the 4 AC vent trim rings? It was easy on the JK - just push a tab inside the vent. I can't see anything on the JL. I'd like to paint the rings without disassembling the dash.

I have not done it myself, but all the videos show them being screwed on from the back. They are swapped between old and new dash that way.
