Current setup on my 2018 JLU Sahara, std v6, automatic:
  • Accomplished total electrical separation of Aux Batt
  • see: thread Aux Battery Cables, post #91
In spirit of more simplicity, I could eliminate the IBS (intelligent battery sensor) too?
Confession, I lack confidence in the supposed benefits of the IBS via the SOC, SOH, SOF data.

So, any show stoppers to removing the IBS?

The IBS monitors both Main & Aux. That data is used to manage the smart recharging of both. It still works perfectly fine with the Aux delete.

Don't remove it. It provides zero benefits and only adds recharging drawbacks.

What do you expect to gain by removing the IBS? Removing one component from a system of integrated components may leave you with other issues.

Key: "may". Hate that catch all.
Is non-deterministic, elevates fear as opposed to evaluating facts.

My goal is to simplify electronics where reasonable.
  • Does battery charge without the IBS? - yes
  • Does IBS fail much (MTBF)? - unknown so far
  • Does IBS improve battery life?
    • IF YES, how much - 1% or 5% or 20% or 50% ?
      • if less than 20% improvement, I like simplicity more, will remove.
      • else if equal or greater than 20%, is benefit to keep
    • else (NO) - remove
I need more facts to make a good decision.

No one is going to have those facts, you can go ahead and give it up. Everything is going to be "may" or "probably" or "I think" or "in my experience" but no one will have concrete numbers backed by experimentation and data collection. Just how they feel it worked if they made this chnage

Yes, giving up seems reasonable. BUT! A HERO Jeep owner rides to the rescue!
Well, my hero of the moment.

Thread: My Testing of the IBS/IBM System: post #1, post #5.

Like WOW, exactly the facts I was hoping to find.
My apologies for failing to dig deep enough to uncover this thread before creating mine.

Based on post #5, will remove my IBS.
And report back with success or consequences of.

So when you said you needed all those facts to make a decision, you didn't really need any of those facts

The IBS monitors only the CR[an]K (i.e. main) battery.

As a technical matter, it can read data only for the battery to which it's directly attached.
Ok dumb question which hopefully has a dumbed down answer. If the two batteries are connected in parallel why doesn’t the IBS “see them” as one slightly larger battery?

The author of post #5 in the thread you found is very knowledgeable about JL battery systems and electronics and has provided incredibly valuable information to the forum.

However, I don't agree with his guess (from 3 years ago) about the JL IBS and smart charging. The fact automotive "smart" charging existed before IBS technology was in regular use does not necessarily mean JL charging is designed to function without the IBS. The loss of IBS data for battery temperature, alone, could lead to battery damage.

In any case, if you go ahead with your plan, you should probably use JScan to set "IBS Present" to "Off", in case it actually makes a difference to a JL.

Terry, as muxdup said in post #7, it may, probably, I think, from my experience only see one battery or source.

Well, sort of yes. True, since all those facts already existed in another thread.
But, I was unaware of them and so mistakenly thought I needed to generate them.
Very thankful it was just a matter of digging a little bit more.

The Jeep community of owners is the best! And this forum is too!
