I run 89 in my 3.6. It idles like crap on 87. The Compression ratio on this motor is REALLY high for piss gas. This has been argued a lot on this forum.

I actively hate you people that can get premium for only $0.30 more. I haven't found a gas station in the last 5 years that offers premium for less than $0.60 more than regular. Recently it's been $0.70 at the crap stations and a dollar or more at the good ones. If I could get it that cheap, i'd run it in everything.I usually waste $5 a week on far dumber shit (15k-mile national annual average / 20MPG = 750GAL x $0.30 price increase from 87 to 89 / 52 weeks = $4.33/wk) ?‍![]()
Just to clarify, my example was only showing the difference from 87 to 89 mid-grade and not 91+ premium. So technically, I'm not getting "premium" for 30¢ extra, just mid-grade.I actively hate you people that can get premium for only $0.30 more. To add another data point, i've tested the premium vs regular difference extensively in my 2021 JLU80 and found zero difference. No more power, no more MPGs and no audible knock on either grade. Same as all my other vehicles (that don't require it).
Yes that makes more sense. Your prices are pretty close to what i'm seeing here then. Sheetz does lots of pricing promotions, around here at least - over the American holidays they always have the "Unleaded 88" (their name for E15) for really cheap. It was $2.99 last week, and actually $1.77 over the 4th. Actually now that I think of it, I believe Sheetz had all grades at $1.77 over the 4th cause the lines were causing traffic problems. There is one Sheetz location within reasonable distance, for me, that always has 88 at $2.99, so I will often run a couple tanks of it mixed in with the regular 87. It's a waste of time on a small car but on the 20gal tank in the JLU or the 26gal in my Silverado, it makes a big difference. Unfortunately, aside from that July 4th Sheetz deal, no one ever runs promotions on premium fuel. It remains at $4.49+ pretty much all the time.Just to clarify, my example was only showing the difference from 87 to 89 mid-grade and not 91+ premium. I'm on the west coast of our state, so really not too far away, same stupid gas tax and our prices are pretty close otherwise. This weekend, our 87 was $3.99 and 93 was $4.74 with 89 and 91 spaced out in between. Sheetz is now showing $3.89 for 87, $4.19 for 89 and $4.49 for 91. Some of the stations in Reading seem close, but yeah, you have a giant 44¢ jump to midgrade at Wawa, even though your 87 and 91 is actually a little cheaper than ours.
I always buy at Sunoco and no one ever tracks their 89 and 91 prices, but our Sheetz pricing has been really weird this year. Several times this summer I've had people tell me they had all of their grades priced exactly the same as the cheap shit (not even a penny more). The other stations then need to fudge their mid-grades to be lower because of that.
And sure, maybe my JL doesn't need premium gas. I just like paying my weekly tithes to the oil cartels, since they're now a struggling industry that desperately needs our money to stave off big electric ?
Yeah, I think they had regular 87 (or possibly all regular unleaded grades) for $1.776 on the 4th of July. My mom spent a few hours driving all over town and waiting in long lines trying to find a station that wasn't sold out that day. Probably still ended up saving money, but how much is your time worth? Something fun to do on a holiday I guess. ?Yes that makes more sense. Your prices are pretty close to what i'm seeing here then.
