This sentiment only applies when you are actually looking at the same thing.

It is not very helpful when you are looking at, or comparing different things.

For example; For any given offset dimension you can find wheels that vary in back space dimensions.

For example; For any given backspace dimension you can find wheels that vary in offset dimension.

The old saying might be more appropriately phrased: "Two different ways of looking at different things"

For practical purposes, backspace relates to component clearance while offset relates to steering geometry and vehicle handling, so it makes sense to have different ways to focus on the different things.

What lift are you running ? Any issues with rub? I’m looking at 37x12.5x17 BFG MT’KM3’s on 17x9’s with -6 offset (4.76 backspace) to put on my sport with a RK 2.5 max flex lift .. RK said I might see some rub at full lock on the lower front arms..

Mopar 2” lift. The front tires just barely tap the low point of the fender liner at full flex + full lock. I’ll get a picture later to be more specific. I haven’t removed those plastic guards at the lower rear of the rear fenders so the tires tap those at full flex as well. Again, I’ll get a few pictures to clarify.
Otherwise, everything tucks nicely at all angles.
A couple things I would note for your case:
1. The 37” BFG KM3s mounted on 17x8.5 on my Jeep actually measure out to 36” so they run small which likely reduces the rub risk. I doubt there will be much difference on 17x9 wheel but it may make the tire stand a little taller so the actual diameter may not be the same as what I’ve got.
2. I don’t know the specifics but I recall that the sport has narrower axles than rubicon which will likely play a role in clearances and finding appropriate wheel BS. Probably also attributes to the rub risk on the LCA.
3. Sport fenders sit lower than rubicon fenders. Less clearance.
I don’t know much about the JL Sport suspension but the above items are what I would be looking at. Check with RK for suggested bump stop thickness to limit up travel. I used Teraflex’s bump stop kit at the rear for finer tuning (it’s a nice shim kit). Will add the fronts later.
The BFG KM3s are amazing tires. You will love them.

Pictures of rub locations.
These are the two lowest spots on the ceiling of the front inner fender well. They surround a bolt location that is tucked in the recess. Tires just barely tap this location at full lock + stuffed.

Next spot is at the rear. Many people remove these guards. I haven’t and they do get rubbed by the tire when stuffed.
