In light of the recent story surrounding the accident in Moab, I decided to check my insurance to see if I would be covered off-road. I didn’t feel necessary to post this in the thread surrounding the event but thought I would share. I have State Farm and this is what they said:

“Coverage for the Jeep will extend while you are off roading as long as you are NOT racing or any contest“.

I also took the opportunity to get a $1mm Umbrella for $208 PER YEAR.

Seemed like a good idea.

Take care and keep the rubber down.

I suppose it's just like everything else related to the insurance industry, it's a numbers game. They figure that the likelihood of accidents isn't any more (or at least negligible) off-road than it is on-road. Most off-roaders don't file a claim unless it's something pretty serious, so insurance companies are OK with it.

You can buy enough insurance to bankrupt yourself. You can even buy bankruptcy insurance to cover your insurance buying spending spree!

My personal philosophy is if you want to avoid danger, simply never leave the house.

But those natural gas leaks tho...

Many types of insurance are very affordable. Another is renter's insurance. It's like $100 a year, and yet so many renters don't get it. Then there's a fire or flood and the victims are on TV saying "I lost everything".

For $208 a year to cover basically everything about your Jeep, it's silly not to have it.
