Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
So we typically travel during the winter in the South West from Michigan, but we are staying home this year so that my wife can take care of her elderly mother. I can't just hang out and play video games all day every day and need something to do to pass the cold days of winter away. With that said, I made myself and a couple friends a custom blanket that we keep in our Jeeps and use them for laying on the ground when checking or working on our Jeeps on the edge of the trail or for when every you don't want to lay directly on the ground.

The blanket is a high quality marine grade vinyl with a like suede type material attached to the vinyl. It is very pliable but still tough. Being marine grade, it is weather resistant and moisture resistant. It is pricey at 34.99 a yard so with state tax it is $37.8 a yard.

The blanket is approx 50x36 so just under a 1 1/2 yards of fabric.

I made these as a gift for the crew from Trail Toyz Off Road in Wasila Alaska that took me off roading all over Alaska. They loved them. I love it and I am sure others will also appreciate them. It beats the heck out of a Harbor Freight blanket as it does not suck up water and soak you while you are doing trail repairs. It does not stink from mud and you can easily clean it. Folds up easily and is easy to store in the Jeep. I also would include custom embroidery like this.

The vinyl side is a dark blue. I know in the picture it looks black, but it is a dark blue.

Plus you might get a picture of your buddy working on his Toyota using your blanket like I did.

The thread color for the embroidery part can be just about any color within reason. Just be kind of reasonable on what you want embroidered. I will probably do the embroidery on a large patch then sew the patch to the blanket. What do you all think?

My wife attempted to explain material by the yard to me, but all she did was confuse me. Not sure what the length of the material is, if that matters in this Case. So... a 6'X6' blanket would be about $150.00?? Let me know. Thanks

By the yard means by the linear yard of the bolt (roll). So if a bolt is 45” wide (typical width), a piece that is 6 ft long is still just 2 yards.

Yea that's what my wife said, but I don't know what the width of the material is that is being offered. But you did put it much more concise for me to comprehend.

Ignore. Maths are hard for me tonight it seems. 50x36 is just under 1.5 yrds assuming the bolt is 36” wide.
Honestly I have no idea either, as 50x36 means just over 1.5 yrds if the width is 36” (not as common) or exactly 1 yrd if it’s 50” wide (a little more common than 36”). But if there’s a hem then it adds to it some, too, for the final size to be 50x36.

The material is 57 inches wide. So it could be made 56x56 easier. So just short of. 5x5foot. Need to make a finished edge.

To get to a 6x6 there would be one long seam joining it together Or a 56x72 would be easier and not create a bunch of scrap material. Cutting a strip 6 feet long and 16 inch wide would make the rest of that piece of fabric not large enough to use on another blanket.

A 56x72 is just over 3 yards.

Personally, I carry a tarp. Cheap $8 tarp. It has multiple uses. Including covering filthy, dirty, muddy, wet ground before laying down.
it would be nice to have something with a little cushion at times. But I think the price point is too high.
I’m not trying to bag on the idea. You essentially asked for feedback so that’s my opinion. 🙂 Hope I’m proven wrong and you sell lots.

I’m definitely interested. I carry a tarp and a movers blanket. Your idea seems like a better solution. Just brainstorming. Some folks might want it rolled up like a shooters mat once it’s used and dirty. But that may be unnecessarily complex and costly. Velcro straps might be the better way. I’m probably over thinking it.

The price point is high, because the material cost is high. I could buy the $9.99 per yard material, but I have one made with the higher quality fabric and I and the friends that I have made them for love them. I have used the cheap tarps before and well it is just not the same and it shouldn't be. I know these are not for everyone. And I don't want to make these for everyone.

I'll order one and pay you right now for one. I use regular towels right now, and they are only as good as the ground they are on. PM me what you need and how to pay.

wibornz,

My mom was a seamstress, and she taught me enough to be dangerous with a sewing machine. Based on your pictures, it seems plain to me what your are offering is a bargain.

I'd certainly be interested -- using a truck stop "Poly-Blend" drug-rug style blanket I picked up for 10 dollars, and already on my second (maybe third?). Not exactly the most durable, isn't fast drying, and soaks up any fluid that even gets near it.

You could make a half size one for days I'm on the dual-sport or Dirt Orca, and I'd probably get that too/

I’ve purchased a lot of fabric before over a couple decades—some bolts were 54” wide—and I guess I just don’t understand how that’s 3 yards. 72” == 6’ == 2 yards. To get the hem, that would be just over 2 yards? Similarly your original size of 50x36 should be just over 1 yard with the hem. I’ve always purchased fabric by the linear yard of the bolt (multiple companies/manufacturers, not Joann’s or Walmart); is this company selling it differently? From your "just over 3 yards" it looks like they're selling it by the square yard similarly to carpet? (1.583 * 2 ~= 3 sq-yrd)

Either way, you’re adding value to the raw fabric with the cutting, hemming, and embroidering, so I think the price is fair.
