On the On-board NOCO Genius PRO, there is a red and black wire that goes to the battery, but where the wires merge is a small tab where the black and red wire meets a smaller orange and a blue wire with what looks like a circuit board.

Pic:
Tab on left is dissected.

Tab on right is intact.

Anyone know the purpose of this section of wire?

Total guess but I'd suspect this is how the NOCO figures out that it has a complete connection to a battery and/or monitors the connection. Odd that it would be in the middle of the cable and not in the device itself, but there's likely a good reason for it.

I was told by a gentleman that it is the Ambient Temperature Sensor... I'll accept that.

The circuit was falling apart the more I probed...no way to really verify how the wires were connected inside.

For peace of mind I replaced the unit and made sure to splice further down where I could see the red and black wires.

Ah, temperature sensor in the middle of the cable. That makes a lot of sense and good to know.
You may have saved me from being in the same boat.
