My 4x4 club from WA is considering visiting MT when the weather gets nicer. Someone suggested Blacktail but I saw negative opinions on it (too easy and not worth the long drive). Can anyone suggest a good area to visit and some trails? We're mostly Jeeps capable of trails such as the Rubicon and Moab (~7-9 rated trails). Besides nice views, it would be nice to find some challenges. Probably best to stay away from Fordyce or Sledgehammer-type trails that far from home. Most will be trailering their Jeeps (TJ & JK) but I will probably drive mine (JL) pulling a trailer.

I have a place in Paradise Valley and know the area around Bozeman to Red Lodge and adjacent to Yellowstone. In this area, and in most of Montana as best I can tell, there are no Rubicon/Moab trails of the categories you are looking for. Trails here are mostly scenic or back road. Almost all non-highway roads are gravel or worse. But they are not trails like you are looking for. Blacktail is not a worthwhile destination for any serious jeepers. It is kind of a manmade obstacle course that seems kind of silly when you know the type trails you refer to. Most of the great places are best seen from horses, hiking and ATV's. I suggest that you look at Morrison Jeep Trail in Wyoming, between Cody and the Beartooth Highway. Check locals first as the Beartooth is usually snow covered on into July.

I think I saw that Morrison was closed. Maybe indefinitely due to damage??

I would say there is some great trails in that area but yes not the Rubicon or Moab but still pretty decent stuff.
