I'm still in the process of piecing together a build on a 2-door JLR I ordered and need help deciding between suspension lift and lift provided by portal axles. Portals from 74 Weld are $20K, and they provide 3.8" lift, 4" additional width per side, and a 22% gear reduction. But they don't finish the job as well as you might think. I'm planning on 38x13.50R17 tires, so to do it right I would also want to add Metalcloak Baller ball joints, Metalcloak tie rod and drag link, and adjustable King 2.5 shocks for a 0"-2.5" lift. That brings the total cost to $25K. Compare that to a Metalcloak 3.5" lift with the same ball joints, HD steering, front driveshaft, and Metalcloak Black shocks, at $9K. So, what makes the portals worth the extra $16K? 3.8" more clearance under the axle might be worth that for a dedicated trail rig. My JLR won't be a "dedicated" trail rig. It will be towed, sometimes on a trailer and sometimes flat towed with a tow bar, all over the country. It will need to be reliable when 50 miles from pavement and all alone midway between Moab and the southern Canyonlands NP, or on the Rubicon Trail by myself, etc.

How much more maintenance do portals need? How big of a deal is it to change gear oil in the portals every 5,000 miles? What wear items are there? How many miles can someone expect to get out of them? Are they something that can have the gears, bearings, and seals flown in and be rebuilt in Timbuktu (city in Mali), or when exploring the Philip Smith mountains in northern Alaska, if needed?

I've always loved the idea of portals. 20-25 yrs ago there was a company making them for Volvo, Dana 44 portal mod., for a military vehicle. For your intended use, not very cost effective. Note, maintenance would be the same as a regular axle. You change the diff fluid. The portal "box" on each end of the axle are sealed, oiled or greased like wheel bearings. Unless submerged for an extended period of time, or over 150-200k miles, no worries. They are intended for slow overland use. Because of the extra unsprung weight they're going to ride poorly.

74 Weld recommends changing the gear oil in their portals every 5000 miles, so not the same as the gear oil in a regular axle.
