Hope this is the right section. I just bought a soft top for my new jeep, and after mounting up all the hardware I have been wondering if I should place the hardtop bolts back into the jeep to protect the threaded holes from future rust? Most likely won't have the hard top on again for a few years. Thanks!

Don't worry about it... store them in their designated spot on the lip for the tailgate. Worst case, a little WD40 will clean things up.

Won’t hurt anything and will keep them from getting lost.

I would put them back. Partially to keep the threads clean but mainly so you can't lose them. Something can still happen to them in the tailgate bolt holder (think changing a tire in the dark) but they're certainly not going anywhere bolted back into their original spot and you never need to think about them.
