I have the v6 automatic transmission in MY*JLUR. I have lifted it using the maximus3 3.5 geolift, and running 37" tires.

Overall I am.very happy with how it performs and drives.

I purchased the jeep to be used as a jeep...off road as much as possible. I also loaded it fully so that I can enjoy driving it during good weather around town. It's not a daily driver, but a strong backup for Daily driving. Often I have a tough time deciding between it and my G70 Genesis.

I am considering regearing to 5.13, knowing that for crawling that will be ideal low end torque.

What I don't know is how will it affect my highway driving? Will it be more peppy off the line? Enough to scratch tires If I get aggressive with throttle?

What about fuel economy? Right now I am seeing 12-14mpg. It's not great. I do see 8th gear, but not often, and if I am in the throttle at 75mph, it's usually 6th.

Finally, are the gears noticeably louder than stock? Overall my jeep is very quiet. It will be even quieter once I can move the Hijack outside vs inside like it is now. Waiting for Teraflex Alpha accessory to be released.

I can answer those questions. I re-geared to 5.13 about 20,000 miles ago on my 2019 JLUR. I average about the same mileage that I was getting while on 37s. I can still pull about 19 mpg on the hwy and average 14 to 15 for all around type driving.

I can spin the tires on purpose. The biggest thing is my zero to 60 mph times were cut by 1.4 seconds. So it is a lot faster.......for a Jeep with 37s. It is way faster off the line.

I see 8th gear all the time. It will go into 8th gear in the city at speeds as low as 45 mph. It also holds 8th gear more. I even see 8th gear often when pulling my trailer.

If you have a good quality installer do your gear install, there will be no additional sound from the gears.

There are 4 of the 5 JLURs that I wheel with have 5.13 and the 5th one has stayed with 4.10 gears. The one with 4.10 gears has wheeled everything that we have wheeled with the 5.13 gears. We are all on 37 Cooper STT Pro tires. He does get better fuel mileage, but he also drafts everyone. He will see mileage around 23 mpg when we drive out west to go wheeling. While the others that are not pulling campers will be around 18 to 19 mpg. The eight speed auto transmission makes up for the lack of gearing with 37s quite well. The 5.13 gears makes the JLUR feel like a race car compared to the 4.10 gears. I think that if you do not have the current gear displayed on the dash, it would have been easier to stay with the 4.10 gears. So at the end of the day, if you want a faster Jeep, get the 5.13 gears. The Jeep is more fun to drive, but it is not like it is necessary to have them to wheel the Rubicon Trail, the badge trails, in Colorado or Moab, or Windrock, Rausch Creek, or run the sand dunes. Mind you the sand dunes are probably the place you would notice the gearing the most..

I think for off road driving a Sport or Sahara would benefit more from the re-gear as they do not have the 4 to 1 gear reduction in the transfer case. I am glad I re-geared because I pull a small camper all over the US and it helps for that. I did tow the camper from Michigan to Moab with 4.10 gears and then pulled it again to Moab and the Rubicon trail with the 5.13 gears. I still got the same mileage as the gears did not change that, but it was easier pulling the camper over the mountain passes with the lower gearing.

If you want to make your JLUR feel faster, add this.

HIKE IT-XP PREMIUM

I love this for my JLUR. I was like what ever... throttle controller. blab blab, then rode in a JLUR with one and the difference was very noticeable. In the Hi performance and sport mode, it is hard to not spin the tires. I love the ECO 4x4 mode for wheeling off the road. It make the throttle super smooth and very easy to apply the right amount of throttle in very hazardous situations where to much throttle would cause the Jeep to roll over. In Hi performance mode, my zero to sixty times were faster in 4h because it was so hard to launch with out breaking the rear tires loose at the launch. When drag racing on the sand dunes, my JLUR is noticeably faster than all the other Jeeps running stock gears with out a throttle commander.

Thanks for the detailed reply.. that is what I needed to know.

I guess my lead foot is to blame for my poor mileage. 75-85 is typical cruising speed for me.

I see about 2100 to 2200 rpms at 70 mph.

No regearing for me...yet. I’m in a similar situation as you. I’m stock on 37s and my JLUR lives most of its life in the garage since I’ve owned her (10 months.). I’m traveled on a 3500 mile trip on this setup and wheeler in the SJM and Moab. I just haven’t been in an instance where I really thought to myself that I needed to regear. I’m sure I’d do it if funds were available but maybe in another year. Of course, there are times when I have to manually shift and some times I can’t get into 8th with the crazy winds we get here. I guess if you have the money do it, but in my situation I’d rather put my money towards belly skids and sliders before a regear (my current plan.).

X2 on the HikeIt. It made a whole of difference on mine.

I have 37s and went with 4.88s. I think that gets you really close to a stock setup. I really enjoyed it and thought people who went with 5.13s were crazy until I switched to heavier tires. (Patys to Trail Grapplers). Now it’s a little sluggish and my MPG dropped. I don’t think there’s a universal “right answer” to the question. I’ll just say that if you’re running a pretty light setup and not towing, 4.88s may be best. But if you have a heavy rig and tow, definitely 5.13

I am going 5.13 in the next few weeks on my 2019 v6 with 37" STT pros and 2.5" lift. It is sluggish around town but that doesn't bother me very much. The real reason i am going 5.13 is to improve my performance in 4lo. With the 4.10 i don't have the power that i really wish i had. That has been the most noticeable impact when going to the heavier/larger tires. I will post again once i get the 5.13's installed.

I have been very pleased with my 5.13s and 37s on the 8-speed. Like you, I have a lead foot and prefer to drive between 75 and 80 MPH on the interstate. Long highway drives are more comfortable because the engine is not constantly downshifting to 7th every time a slight incline is hit.

What kind of fuel mileage are you seeing on the dash?

So, if I stay at around 75 MPH in the rolling Piedmont hills/plateaus of central NC, around 17 give or take a little. The more I stay closer to 80 MPH, it starts dropping. I’ve only really seen it tick over 17 when I’m driving secondary/smaller highways between 55 to 65 MPH. The longest I’ve driven on the highway so far has only been 1.5 hrs so the sample distance I’m using may not be as accurate as someone who has driven 4+ hours as I still do a lot of short trips around town running errands.

My Jeep only has OEM plastic bumpers and no additional armor (just so you get a sense of how heavy mine is). Running Moab rock rails (the ones with the tiny ledge for a step) but I took the Rubi rails off so I say that’s a wash. Both track bars are the SteerSmarts Yeti ones so heavier than OEM.

I probably get around 300 miles in range with each tank before I fill up.

Mine has full armor, steel bumper, winch, and my big old self....may account for reduced mileage.

Thanks!

With a lead foot and that weight, I’d do the 5.13s as long as you’re not overly worried about gas mileage.
