After monitoring this Forum for 4 months and listening to the questions and experiences of others I thought that this would be a good time to start this thread. Hope others will jump in and add to this or make corrections.

LESSONS LEARNED

1. Don’t place an order until your 100% sure that production of the vehicle has started. There is no advantage to an early order as seen on this forum. Many have received their vehicles well before early orders. Dealerships will say the standard 6-12 weeks. They don’t know squat. Your expectations can be easily shattered as many have found out.

2. The day you order get a POC from the dealership with a VON printed on it. Wait a week, sometimes less, sometimes more, and get another POC from the Dealer with the VIN, VON and an estimated build date.

3. Day of order ensure that you have a signed purchased agreement. Make sure that it says that if vehicle is not delivered within the time the dealership states (6-8 weeks) (8-12 weeks) or whatever, you can cancel and receive your deposit back.

4. Built it on line before you go to the Dealership. Keep copy of built. Saves time when you get there, makes you more knowledgeable of what is on the POC and cover your ass in case they change pricing or opinions during the production year. Case in point – shipping charges and engine block heater changed on March 1st for the 4 & 2 doors JL’s.

5. During the built if your vehicle ends up I status for more than 5 days go to another dealer, order again, and cancel your first order. Who the hell knows what they are trying to fix and typically after 20 or so days they start a new build anyway. You just lost a lot of ownership time for your new vehicle. (my personal opinion)

6. Join Vehicle FORUM’s – track items that others are raising hell about that are causing delays. Why order options that will put you in JB hell for weeks or months (TRMS, headliners, etc.) when you can easily buy aftermarket.

7. Join a Forum that will do Vehicle Tracking (sometimes cost $25-$35) you will be able to track your build and see others that are like yours to get a feel for the delivery timeline. Don’t expect the Salesperson to keep you abreast of your order. Typically only the Sales Manager has that info and he doesn’t want to be bugged. Some dealerships are great at keeping customers informed but that is not the norm.

You forgot one:

It’s only a vehicle. If you have health, income, a family, and a roof over your head you’re in a place where *many* long to be. Keep your purchase in perspective, and don’t let inevitable disappointments be an excuse to treat people badly. (Advice I’ve had trouble heeding myself, at times.)
