Lake Mead, just outside Las Vegas, is currently 166 feet below it's full water mark. Folks going out the dirt roads to the shoreline see nothing but dry, cracked soil leading down to the water. However, it's only dry for two or three inches. Underneath is the most soul sucking silty mud that has been underwater for more than 50 years.
Today was a beautiful 90 degree Saturday that led many people into the trap.
The good folks from S.N.O.R.R.
spent the day pulling them out.
Please make yourself aware of local conditions before venturing off the pavement...

Good advice. I follow S.N.O.R.R. on instagram, the majority of the recoveries they do are in the lake mead area for this reason. They're a good group of people that do this on their dime and time.

For this reason, I highly recommend that folks visit Boulder Beach if they really want to get close to the lake without much trouble. It makes for a pretty bouncy ride, but still better than getting stuck.

Although nowhere near Lake Mead, I've been thinking about driving across Jean/Roach Dry Lake Bed, but just curious if any fellow Las Vegas Jeepers have ever done this. Seems like it shouldn't be a problem, but just a little concerned about similar surface appearance and underlying mud. Appreciate any thoughts or advice on conditions out there.
