I needed to replace the battery in my 2023 JL and discovered that there is only one battery instead of two for the Start/Stop. Is this normal? I have the 6cyl.

You likely have the e-torque check underneath for a 2nd skid plate on the driver side in red here, the fuel tank is in green

That said the 2nd motor cycle battery is hidden in the fender well under the main battery, pretty sure you have to remove the fuse box to see the opening for it, or pull the fender liner.

Area under main Battery is open, no battery. I checked with the dealer mechanic and service writer ( who is in our Jeep Club and drives a Jeep) and they both said there is no 2nd battery. I don't have a lift so I cannot check to see if there is any cables coming from the metal enclosure opposite of the gas tank.

I ran the VIN and I indeed have the "3.6 24V VVT Etorque Engine UPG I". Nothing mentioned about a 2nd battery. The second week I owned the Jeep (New) I installed an ESS eliminator. Now I need to figure out what the hell is an Etorque is!!! I've been driving for over 65 years and can rebuild an old school V8, but this makes me humble!

You would also have two negative battery cables running from the battery - one with a big label on it.

The short answer is your secondary battery is large and expensive but will generally last a long time. And you have some funkiness with how electric power gets applied to the drive train to help the engine out, giving you a bit more power.

Neither system makes a lot of sense on a vehicle that is supposed to be simple, rebuildable, DIY friendly, and inexpensive.

Such is the way of things today.

So in the picture I posted there will be a 2nd skid under the jeep and thats a 48v battery that helps with things.

You will not need the ESS eliminator. An eTorque is seamless with the start/start since it is a belt driven generator instead of an alternator and starter to re-start the engine. It also has smoother shifting and better acceleration. I love the way mine drives.

For your purposes, both battery systems do the same thing, but in different ways. IMHO, you have the better system. The "two-battery" system that most people talk about involves a smaller motorcycle battery hidden under the main battery. It re-starts the Jeep using the starter, so it makes a lot of noise and isn't very smooth or quick.

Like you, I have the ETorque, and it re-starts the engine quietly and smoothly, relatively speaking. So much so, that I don't bother using the ESS eliminator that is built in to my Tazer. However, If I had to listen to that starter every time I stopped, I would definitely kill the ESS.

If your ESS Eliminator is the type that "remembers the state" of the on/off button on your dash like the Tazer does, you are good to go.
