I turned in my Rubicon 4xe lease last week, so I’ve been without a Jeep since then. I’m driving my sports car (2003 Honda S2000 with 120k miles) full time, which is fun, but I can’t take both my kids in it and my wife can’t drive the sports car (stick shift) so we’ve been doing some creative logistics to share her CUV (Acura MDX).
The Jeepness of the Rubicon was fantastic, I really love the JL platform, and the Rubicon really maxes everything out. I needed about 20% of its capability (I needed the rear locker like 4x over the 3 years and 32k miles I had it) but it was awesome to know it was there.
The 4xe was…eh. When it worked, and I was driving it in a way that used it, it was great. I do lots of little errands, like taking the kids to school, going to the grocery, etc; I live in a dense suburban area so lots of 1 mile trips. For that the 4xe was awesome. But I had lots of recalls, had the “don’t charge or park indoors because fire” issue, had no heat the winter of 2022 because of the coolant pump that failed and was on back order, etc etc. I just had no faith in the drivetrain long term. I also never really got the range it promised, I felt like it was more like 15-16 miles than 20+.
And the market agreed with me, the buyout on mine was $38k, CarMax offered less, and my dealer bought it from Chrysler Financial for like $35k. They have it listed for $37k, we’ll see what they get. No matter, I got a more than fair lease deal, and was happy to turn over the keys and avoid any future reliability disasters. It was a fun experiment, but ultimately not for me.
All is not sad, however; yesterday I signed the paperwork on my 2024 Willy’s order, it’s sitting down on Mark Dodge’s lot waiting for me to pick it up. Family commitments mean that won’t be until early August, but I bought my plane ticket today and I eagerly await my new Jeep.
Old and busted:
The new hotness:
Wild how similar the colors look (Rubicon Sting Grey, Willy’s Anvil). My neighbors probably won’t even notice I got a new vehicle. Which honestly, is totally fine by me.
