Jeep Wrangler advice

My wife has always loved Jeeps. She currently has a 2004 Liberty, which is getting pretty long in the tooth, but is great for hauling around our big dog, the grandkids, getting around in the snow, and occasionally driving on forest service roads for hiking trips. It has, however, been one of the most trouble-prone vehicles we’ve ever owned. This week we’ve been driving a rental Wrangler 4-door while on vacation, and my wife really likes it (for me it’s meh, but that’s irrelevant). We’ve been talking about replacing the Liberty with a Wrangler Unlimited, either a Rubicon or Safari. We won’t be doing any rock crawling, but will occasionally go off-road, and sometimes our road goes unplowed for a day or two in snowy weather. Anyone have experience with either or both, and have any thoughts or preferences? Any maintenance experience?

You don't need the Rubi. Perhaps a Sahara equiped with the limited slip rear dif for the combination of comfort, convenience and back road/snow duty. With the Sahara you can also opt for a "full time" transfer case.

As far as capability a Sport with the rear limited slip will be just as offroad capable as the Sahara at a lower price point and level of trim.

all 3 models are good. its more of what your personal preference and budget are in a jeep.

i'll throw in my views. i downside from a 07 grand cherokee.. i'm more on the budget and functional side of things. so i went with a 2 door jl sport and kept the options to a minimum which are 8 spd auto, a/c, xm and hard top. i went with the 3.6 due to the known reliability and with the 8 spd auto in my opinion is the best combo. for me this is the best jl and 9k trouble free miles. the comfort is great even on long trips. i could go with the same setup in a 4 door, but didnt need the extra space. this is my daily driver and i'm working in stages in a light modded set up. just enough to continue as a daily driver and functional for moderate trails. the jl does very well in the snow with the street tires and open diffs.. i will be replacing them with nitto terra grapplers once they wear out. i have nittos and they are awesome. i swapped out my halogen head and fog light for supernova v4 led bulbs. big difference. added 2" aux led windshield lights. the next mod is a simple winch bumper and winch, then 32" tires.

reading your post, i would go with a sport or sport s either 2 or 4 door. and go from there. the sahara are nice, geared more toward luxury, and the rubicion is the trail ready with lockers, etc. the rubi are geared more toward rock crawling, etc.

hope this will give you some sense of direction in looking for a wrangler. which ever one you decide to get, you wont be disappointed. let me know what you get.
