I'm researching far too late how winter tires work and why not just use whatever looks chunky and came across this - this guy just wants to take out the trash but cant because tires. Funny and thought Id share: Mud Tires vs Winters

I've been learning way too much about the design of tires lately.

My understanding is that for packed snow and ice you want snow to stay stuck in the tire so it can grab. That implies narrow channels with vertical walls. And lots of sipes (slits into the rubber). Side note: this design also grabs rocks, which lots of people here don't appreciate.

In mud, however, you need to do everything possible to eject that mud. That means wide channels with highly-sloped walls. Which, of course, is horrible for packed snow and ice.

An all terrain tire tries to make an appropriate set of compromises to give decent performance characteristics across various driving conditions. No tire will work exceptionally across the board.

I'll take you right to the end of your research. Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3s are the best winter tire for a Jeep. They are far superior in every way to any all-season (really 3 season) tire when temps are below 45F/7C. Available in Jeep sizes all the way up to 35s (315/70R17). Snow & Ice certified.

This video is exactly what I envision when people say their All-Season tire is "good in snow". No, it's not.

In that video, Hakkas would have driven up that driveway like the ice wasn't even there. Don't think you have to get studded for that performance, either. The tread has embedded micro-shards of glass acting like thousands of tiny studs and the compound stays soft conforming to the ice instead of gliding across it like a stiff hockey puck.

Fortunately a fairly small percentage of people live in areas where it makes sense to invest in tires dedicated to winter driving.

But if you’re fortunate enough to live next to enough snow to have fun with, having a dedicated set of winter wheels is nice.

Hakkas are always a sure bet, but if you live on the edge of the consistent snow cover zone and have enough dry pavement during winter the studded versions I found it get annoying/noisy and the loss of dry traction wasn’t worth the extreme ice traction.

I now have Blizzak DM-V2 tires in the narrow Sahara 32” size and they’re good in 12-24” of snow (it’s what I tested them in - 12” on hills /24” flat ground)

This used to be me. Bridgestone Blizzaks were life changing when they came out.
